A friend of mine has a mute that I've never seen before. He doesn't know what it is either. Does anyone know what this is? Tenor and Bass straight mutes for reference.

I was thinking it might be for a flugelhorn.

Or maybe Alto Horn.

Thanks for the insight guys. The one weird part about it is that it fits perfectly in a tenor bell.

It may fit, but how is the intonation?

The bell of a Flugelhorn, Eb Alto Horn, and Bb Tenor Horn (British Baritone) will all be quite similar to a tenor trombone bell.

Yeah. The horn end of that mute seems to be a pretty large diameter. But it also isn't exactly the shape of any bariton/euphonium/tuba mute I've ever seen (which tend to be longer relative to the diameter than this mute appears).

Is it possible it was cut down by a previous owner? None of my metal mutes have a rolled over edge like that. The only mutes I've ever seen that are short like that are harmon mutes or practice mutes, and it obviously isn't either of those.

Most definitely a flugel or an alto horn mute. Just a standard straight mute there, won't work for your trombones there though.
