Holton TR large bore tenors

I'm referring to the TR150, TR158 and TR160 models
Does anyone out there own one? Any comments or opinions on overall quality would be welcome.
Hickey's lists them as having an oversized bell of 9". Is it a true 9" or just a rounded up 8.5"? Also the difference between the 150 and 158 is just the valve linkage ratio: 'short' or 'standard'. I'm wondering if one could be converted to the other without too much trouble or expense.

I'm looking for a large bore tenor and there's a used one listed online near me for a good price but I've not heard much about Holtons and how they might rate compared to other reputable brands. I'm just looking for a little input before I go and try out this horn.

Cheers,
Robert

Holtons are great horns if you can find one that's not beat to hell. I have a friend with a 150 and he sounds great on it. I used to own the 156. 158 has a rose bell. The 9" is as close as matters to 9", so possibly 8 7/8. The 161 is a 525 bore. Not sure about the 160.

Most of the Holtons people will refer to are older horns, not the new ones you can buy. My impression is that new Holtons are not purchased that often; can't tell you why.

9 inch rose brass bells were standard, but I have heard of yellow brass bells being offered. The 150 has the trigger behind the bell brace while the 158 has the trigger in front of the brace, like most if not all modern trigger trombones. From reading threads on this subject on the old forum I believe they had different lead pipes. Nickel silver outer slides were standard on the hand slide.

You should be able to find one of these used at a fair price. They have a reputation for being excellent instruments.

The 160 is an open wrap version of the 150. This is a more recent offering.

This is very useful. My Duo Gravis has the trigger behind the bell brace and this keeps me from needing any extra device to aid in holding the horn. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for a TR150 from now on.
