Practice routine

Hi everyone I am new to the forum. I just picked up a trombone after not playing for the past 10 years or so since college. I was originally a tuba player who doubled on bass in jazz band in high school and college. I got a killer deal in a new blessing b88 so thought I could make the switch to tenor.

Anyways my question is as I am starting back up and really for the first time on a tenor. What things should I focus on to make sure I dont get into any bad habits? What does a 30 minute practice routine look like for you? Also what would be a good etude book that I could pick up and start working through. Thanks in advance.

Long notes, scales and arpeggios to start, with metronome around 60BPM. I use How Brass Players do it for lip slurs and embouchure building. Then I work on charts for upcoming gigs. To finish I always include at least one piece of music enjoy playing, often with a play along track, charts or improv.

Michael Davis put out 10, 15 , & 20 minute warm up books which you might find useful. Buddy Baker has a trombone method that you can easily tailor to your situation. The Reinhardt Routines are excellent as well. The Davis & Baker can be found at Hickeys, while the Reinhardt I believe must be offered from boptism.com. Don't forget to give yourself plenty of rest and listen to great players to get that ideal sound in your ear!

+1 on M Davis. Why not do the 15 min version and then move on to some music you like? Bach cello suites, Bordogni (formerly known as Rochut) or maybe improvisation/jazz standards?
