I'll be coming to Pittsburgh soon and I'd like to visit some music shops in hopes of trying out a trombone. Does anybody know if there is a decent brass shop in Pittsburgh?

There is a Shires distrubutor:
Johnstonbaugh’s Music

4842 William Flinn Hwy
Allison Park, PA 15101
phone: 724.444.5660
fax: 724.444.5670

They came down to Morgantown, WV... sometime in 2017 (oh God, that was now "two" years ago, I'm getting old) to do a Shires event and seemed to have a pretty decent stock, though mostly of large bores and basses.

Volkweins Music seldom has much to try, though they do have some instruments. Usually new, not much consignment or 2nd hand, at least in the last few years when I visited. They do have a superb tech who built my dependent tenor valve section, for what its worth!

Hollis & Germann music is part owned by an acquaintance of mine's father. He did some work for me as well not too long ago, though I don't remember what it was! They had a few horns to try though it's a small space.

I'd probably contact any of them first to see what they might have in stock before travelling; they are all three in fairly different parts of town.

Thank you, Matt. If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you pay for the valve section?

Total project was in the neighborhood of $1500 but I was very patient with parts!

Thank you. I ended up visiting Johnstonbaugh. Great guys. Got to try a few Edwards, Shires, and Courtois. The one guy gave me a pretty good deal on a Courtois that I'm still considering.

Jim Nova probably has more horns in his living room than any store in town. But I don't think they are for sale.
