King 2b balance question

Post by Jmac »

I own a King 2b from the late 1940’s. I’ve had it for about a month and really enjoy playing it. My only complaint is, and it’s not a huge one, is that it’s a little heavy on the bell side. It feels like it needs a slightly heavier counterweight. Is this common with 2b’s? Is it possible or appropriate to add weight to the counterweight? The horn itself actually feels fairly light and nimble. Thanks

As I understand it there are 6 ounce and 8 ounce counterweights.

If you want to see if an 8 ounce weight would be better, try taping a AA battery to the tuning slide brace. That should approximate the weight difference.

I'm not sure if you can get them "original King", but some of our vendors seem to offer two different weights.

Thanks I’ll try that. I have an older 3b with a 3 piece counterweight. I’m wondering if that weight might be heavier.
