Same experience for me on Shires. I have tried 3 custom Shires. All are disappointing. A Q36YR that I tried though… Many worlds better!

My experience is very different from you on the 835 though. Which mouthpiece did you use? From the 830 and 822G onwards they seems to like larger, deeper mouthpiece. My 830 sound is also shrill when used with 59L (1.5G-ish) piece.

I brought almost my whole stable. Started with my Wedge 110G Brass (27.94 (110)) on all, since that size is my daily driver size. Sounds fine on the 822G when taped, but of course I removed the tape for the tests and it (as well as the others) went into the mouthpiece receiver the standard 1" +/-. The deepest I brought with me was my Markey 87 (28.57 (112)) which is almost as deep/wide as your Yeo. It was knarly with Rheingold. If I ever had to play that piece, it would be on the Markey 87 or even 90. But I admit, I didn't try it on the 835, only on the two Shires. I had a Yamaha 59L with me, but didn't try it on any. I also have a Greg Black 1.5 and 1 7/16 at home. Curious to see how they are. They worked fine for me on the 822G. They are, IMHO Bach 1.5G on steroids.
Funny, that my 822G came with the Yeo replica (silver). I read at the time, the 59L came with the 830 back then - around 2016.

My 830 came with 59L indeed, custom gold-plated model. That was back in 2016. Around 1 or 2 years after that Yamaha changed to a normal 59L. The 835 now comes with 61D4L, which is very close to the Yeo. The specs are identical. Just the outside shape and finish that are different.

I think that the Q bells may be lightweight vs the M (medium) that was on the Custom, which might explain some but not all of the difference.

Also: there's another thread here about Shires leadpipes, the #2 (no letters) is optimum for most players. I would recommend putting it in and not replacing it unless you find you can't get used to it.

I'm told that the Q bell is a BII 7 in medium weight yellow or gold brass.

I have a Q yellow bass bell and it is heavier than the BI 7 RG LW bell I usually use.

The Shires Q basses are great. I tossed my normal leadpipe into one and it played essentially exactly how I like. I use a set of those valves on my daily driver that I spent a bunch of time getting super tight and dialed in. I also printed different stop arms to shorten the throw.

Try the Custom C tuning slide as well. I find they do little to the color but I like the response of the C in the double trigger range. Every lead pipe will be a compromise, find one that's a good compromise for you. I fell the Shires custom 2 lead pipe is a good pipe, not too restrictive or open, the MK 50 is a little more open than the #2, if you need accuracy in the upper range, that's mostly a player issue, and the MK 50 won't help.

Doug Bert at Brass Exchange has a lot of new and used Shires stock coming in and out of his shop. I’m in Australia and have used his services a few times, he’s great to deal with and has fair pricing and reasonable shipping rates. I’m not sure if he has the parts you’re looking for currently, but worth a shot to see what he may have coming in.

Have you considered Musik Bertram in Freiburg. I don't know if they have many Shires parts and they are not particularly cheap, but I have had only good experiences with their service.
