Hey guys,
Friend gave me a small bore Elkhart Olds bone.. pretty decent little horn. Just need to get a new mouthpiece for it.. Did these take a standard small shanks?

Olds horns were made in California, not Indiana. Maybe after they went out of business and somebody used the name for a short while....?

As for the mouthpiece... Try one in it and see. Should go it 1 inch.

After Olds shut down in 1979, the name passed to another company (I think Peter LaPlaca was involved). I think the Elkhart Olds horns were built by Blessing.

Should be a standard receiver.

Roger on all that.. Came with a beat to hell Blessing 6.5 AL.. seems like it would fit fine if it were round lol

The "new" Olds started with a fanfare and then shriveled up and all but disappeared from the scene. The horns I saw were a disappointment. Any Ambassador from Olds would be a step up.

I don't think they ever actually made any instruments themselves. They've got a website these days and a line of what looks like student instruments, possibly made in China...

There were "Olds" instruments made by Weril for a time, same with DEG. Not sure about today.

As far as I know, none of the "Olds" instruments sold after the Olds factory in Fullerton, California closed in 1979 have anything to do with, or any similarity to, the "real" Olds. No similar parts, no shared design philosophy, not comparable manufacturing quality. The successors simply purchased the name Olds.

Did DEG ever actually make their own instruments, or were they all stencils? I know Allied made instruments for them at one time, as did Willson. I have some vague recollection of a relationship between DEG and Weril,
