Something I have been curious about trying is a King 5B with its single valve and 9.5" Bell with the dual board .536" .547" slide. I think the combination would be fun to play and it would fall into the "Large Tenor" vs "Small Bass." Just don't have the means to make it happen. Maybe one day I will own both a 5B and a 6B and combine the two. Just a thought though.

The 6B has a single bore 0.562" slide. Some of the older 5B Symphonies had the 0.536/0.547" slides.

Or are you talking about using a 6B bell with the dual bore 5B slide?

5B bell is only 9” and the throat is that of a tenor as well, so it would be closer to the Chicago style Bach (50 slide, 42 bell).

Fwiw what you’re describing would be almost identical to an 88H with a 525/547 option and the HK bell. I actually have an 88HK bell setup for Shires at the moment that I’m passively selling. And a 525/547 slide setup for shires too! It is a cool setup. The extra .5” doesn’t make a huge difference imo

If you’re talking about a .562 slide on the 9” bell that combo also can work well too. I did something similar for awhile while I was doing some studio work.

A Holton TR-183 is pretty much that.

Isn't the 183 bell section larger throughout than that of the 1480, except for the rim diameter?

Too bad John Sandhagen doesn't hang around here any more. He had a modular setup where he could put a 1480 bell and tuning slide on a Bach 50 body. He called it his "Swiss Army trombone".

If something is labeled "Swiss Army" without the "knife" epithet, I can't help thinking of something small, complicated and crowded, lacking serious sea going capabilities.....
