Hello, I am travelling to the US East Coast the following weeks. Do you know any music store which has a big trombone assortment to offer, where I can test trombones? Used and/or new. I am looking for a jazz tenor trombone and I am quite open for different models.

I am in the Great Lakes region and then NY/PHI/Washington.

Thank you for your recommendations.

By far the best place is Dillon Music in Iselin, NJ (between Philadelphia and New York City, but closer to New York).

There is a music store district in New York City on 48th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, but it has become more of a Gee-Tar center.

Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center, located in Wheaton, MD on the north side of Washington DC. Their inventory is a mix of new and used instruments and their stock can go up and down. They have unique system in which you must be escorted upstairs to the band/orchestral instruments, but it is usually worth the effort.

Baltimore Brass Company, located in Catonsville, MD on the west side of Baltimore. All of their instruments are out for you to try. They might ask you to step into a practice module for testing the instruments.

These stores do not have the massive quantity of instruments that Dilllon’s has, but I have found great horns at both businesses.

I believe that the Schmitt Music Trombone Shop in Bloomington, Minnesota (Minneapolis vicinity) has a large selection of trombones to try:

If you ever watch one of the great trombone youtube reviews that Keith does at Schmidt, you can see dozens and dozens of trombones on the display wall and display stands. Would love to visit someday.

J Landress in Manhattan is worth a visit if you’ll be in the city.

There are no music stores of any kind left on 48th Street. The vertical suburbanization of Manhattan is nearly complete.
