Yamaha YSL-3530R
Does anyone have information or technical data for this small/medium bore trombone, Yamaha YSL-3530R? When it was made, quality of sound, anybody famous or professional ever play one for their main horn? Any opinions from trombonists who have played this model?

That’s the 500/525, aka the straight version of a YSL356?

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
Idk, that is one of the things I am trying to find out. I purchased this horn on eBay, but it was advertised as a YSL-455GR. I received a rebate for $150 from the $450 I paid for it. I am just trying to find out if it is a decent straight tenor or if I should look for another? It came with a Bach 7C, which I like better than the 6.5AL or the YAC48. I was using a YSL-352 before, and I think this is a better sounding horn. It vibrates in the tubing and bell section better than the 352, imho.

Interesting. That is definitely not their large/medium bore bell section like the 356. Looks like a 352 with a red bell. Not sure if any pro playing one but that shouldn’t necessarily deter you. Yamaha student models are pretty good. Red brass is off the beaten path for small bores but not unheard of.

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
That is definitely not a 3530R bell section. It's a narrow (352/354-style) chassis and has a yellow bell, unlike the wide (455-style) chassis with red bell that the 3530R has. You probably have a 3530R slide and a 352 bell.

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
I saw a Yamaha on eBay a while ago where the seller described it as a short-lived model that was essentially a 352 w/a red brass bell. Sorry I don't remember the specifics, but the seller seemed knowledgeable in the ad, and knew the model numbers. Maybe it's one of those horns?

For reference, the 455G (8" 500/525) is a Japanese market instrument equivalent of the 355, and a very nice general purpose horn. I picked one up on ebay (in nicer shape than the one shown) for a good price that i wouldn't hesitate to take just about any where but a bass gig. The direct-from-Japan shipping was amazingly fast even to the US east coast (1-2 days).

YSL-351 and YSL-353 are both 352s with red bells. 351 has a nickel bell brace and all yellow slide, 353 has all yellow bell braces and nickel oversleeves on the slide.CalgaryTbone wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 10:23 pm I saw a Yamaha on eBay a while ago where the seller described it as a short-lived model that was essentially a 352 w/a red brass bell. I don't think it's either of these though...the pictures the OP posted look like all yellow brass to me.

If I remember right, the four digit numbers were the horns sold in mainly the Japanese market?

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
Yes, all 4-digit model numbers (almost universally ending in a zero, the YSL-8425 line being the only exception I know of) were sold in Japan only.atopper333 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 5:29 pm If I remember right, the four digit numbers were the horns sold in mainly the Japanese market?

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
Careful, there must have been some mix up in the post. Those are pictures from 2 different horns.
It looks like the last 2 photos, 532 and 533, aren't the same horn as the first 3 photos, 510, 511, 512.
Back to back it's more obvious so I'll repost them.

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
Interesting, I think you’re right. it isn’t as obvious to spot visually from pictures with this model whether it’s the larger or smaller chassis. When you compare them back to back like that it does appear to be the larger tuning slide. But the tenon looks a touch small to be the medium bore.
Can you measure the bell section? Presumable it’s diameter is 8” at its largest point?

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
I measured the receiver and it is 0.485 +/-. The bell is 8”. The tuning slide is different than the ysl-352 and the ysl-354 which have the large side and small side male, and this one has the large side male and the small side female,

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
But the slide on the ysl-3530 is wider and bigger in diameter than the ysl-352 and the ysl-354.

Re: Yamaha YSL-3530R
What are the TWO Yamaha horns that you have pictured? You show one with a standard tuning slide, where both legs are "male", and one with a reverse tuning slide, where the larger leg is male and the smaller leg is female.
The first picture you show looks to be the YSL-3530R, and has a standard tuning slide on the bell with a flanged bottom to the bell brace.
Then you show pictures of another trombone with a much more dented bell section that has a reversed tuning slide, and a cylindrical bottom to the bell brace.

The more dented one is the 3530r, the other one is the 352.tbonesullivan wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 8:59 pmWhat are the TWO Yamaha horns that you have pictured?
