Holton Bells

Post by Druidman »

Hey all!

I believe there's been a topic about this, but I haven't found it, but does anybody know the general construction of Holton bells? I believe they're usually two-piece with a soldered rim, but I'm second-guessing myself.

Thanks!

Are there any professional flares that aren’t at least in some way “hand hammered”? They aren’t made by robots and they are eventually spun and more ‘burnished’, but they all get hand hammered at some point, so I think that term is a little useless.

As for the seamed flare, mine isn’t, but it is a very late build one from when they consolidated production with UMI.

I'm not aware of any seamed flare Holtons, but my sample size is pretty small.

My 1980ish 156 screw bell is definitely not a seamed flare. Pretty sure it is unsoldered.

My sample size is 2:

My own 168 does not have a seamed flare, and the seams are otherwise very difficult to see. It has a soldered bell bead.

I cannot recall the TR181 bass trombone bell construction...

If it is a two piece bell the stem are almost always hand hammered ..The flare however almost never…

I've had several Tr180, Tr181, 185, and 183, and all have been two piece bells with unsoldered rims.
