Is there any difference in size between a 12 and a 16 bell?
Thanks.

They are the same measurement at the end of the flare, however I do not know if they are identical otherwise.

Bell sections from the 8, 9, 10, 12, and 16 all have identical specs unless they were custom ordered to be different from Bach

apart from those custom orders Sam notes, the change in a Bach small bore all comes from the slide.

The really early horns are an exception, of course.

Does the LT16M have a different neck pipe? I can't remember, but I know the ad copy mentions an "open gooseneck".

Yes, that's one of the only changes you can get after the early days.

What are the Bach 16s with the 8" bell?

Small bore Bach horns are foreign to me.

Never seen or heard of one, but there might be a couple out there.

Well there you go! Turns out I'm so foreign to Bach small bores that I made something up in my head.

The 36 and 34(?) have an 8” bell, but are medium bores. You might be able to put one on a small bore frame or put a small slide on the medium bore bell section but there are some differences in designs that make this not as trivial to accomplish as one might think

I know the bell sections are different sizes/shapes, but I think as long as the larger bell is mounted to the smaller bell section it will play nicely. I’m remembering my time in undergrad with Luis Bonilla - he played a Bach 16M but with a 36(G, I believe?) bell mounted onto it. Sounded great and in tune. Not sure how much finagling he had to do to get it right though.

Ah! I was thinking the narrow bell sections on the smaller side perhaps made the overall bell section longer. I had an issue awhile ago where something similarish was super flat but it was admittedly not a Bach slide on a Bach bell section. If that's the case, the connector should be the same, so a 16 slide on a 36 bell is probably a decent combo. Similar to the Yamaha medium bores.

A special order, I would think. I once owned an older 36 with an 8.5" bell. The shop card confirmed it was ordered that way.

The 34 and 36 bells were spun on different mandrels. I have been told that the 34 mandrel is the same one used on the Bach Bb bass trumpet. The 36 bell has a larger throat and (slightly) slower flare rate relative to the 34. (The 36 and 42 bells are spun on the same mandrel. The only difference is that the 36 is trimmed at 8 inches and the 42 is trimmed at 8 1/2 inches.)

I think of the 34 as big small bore and the 36 as a small big bore.
