What's your favorite Eddie Palmieri album? Do you have any cool stories about any of the trombonists who have worked with him? I am really interested in Barry Rogers and Jose Rodriguez stories.

Nice! You talked about a lot of cats that I'm not familiar with. I've never heard Palmieri's La Perfecta album, so I just picked it up on your recommendation.

I got to hear Palmieri play live first when I was in high school at the Chicago Jazz Festival. I have to admit that his soloing went over my head at the time. A few years ago he came to my area and I took my wife to hear the concert. He didn't have any trombones in the band at the time, unfortunately, but my wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed to show.

Looking forward to your next episode.

Dave

I think that was his band’s name- La Perfecta.

Boy, he made a TON of great music over many decades.

Yeah, he has made a lot of music and had a lot of great trombonists in his bands.

La Perfecta is both the name of the band and their first album, I think.

Favorite E P album: hands down is The Sun of Latin Music. There are others that I like for very different reasons. Lucumí macumba voodoo has one of the most interesting Mano a Mano that you could ever hear between and his late brother Charlie. The”White Album really nice big band arrangements to include trombone solos etc, etc, etc. others I really like are Solito, Sentido, With friends live at the UPR, and Unfinished Masterpiece, He’s been recording under his own name for about 60+years, so this list can pretty long pretty quickly. Barry was on the staff at Fania Records so he’s in a lot of their recordings sometimes credited, many times not. You can also hear Barry’s stylings in The Alegre all Stars, perhaps the Tico-Alegre All stars, and most definitely, The Fania All Stars

Total agreement on "Sun of Latin Music." For me, that and "Unfinished Masterpiece" express the best of mid''70's salsa. The musical and emotional range (high-density mainstream salsa/danzón/Cumbia/exploratory modern stylings) is insane, and light-years beyond any contemporaneous salsa artist that I know of. "Un Dia Bonito" presents a huge range within a single piece, including a delicious Barry Rogers solo toward the end. That said, I'm politely ignoring all that may have been happening in Cuba, starting with Irakere...

“Palmas” is one of my favorite albums. It’s all Instrumental. Conrad Herwig with Brian Lynch (tpt) and Donald Harrison (alto) is such a great combination. There’a a moment in the last track with Lynch and Harrison trading that is absolutely electric!
