Howdy,

thought I'd share this abomination of a slide with everyone. It started as a stock 50 slide with a nickel crook that someone had added. Since the leadpipe was reamed out, I thought I'd put a new one in, since it seemed pretty good otherwise. Turns out that pipe REALLY didn't want to come out. Instead, my tech found a tube in his stocks and put it all together, aligned it, etc. It's only when we tried to put in the Holton 185 leadpipe I had that it became clear that this was no .562 tube... it's an Olds .554, exact same outer diameter as a 50 tube. I thought... Why not? So he shaved down the leadpipe a bit, and now I have a pretty unique dual bore slide.

Not only is it unique, but it plays pretty well and sounds great too. Really buttery mid register sound and response, but it doesn't choke off anywhere either.

Was it John Sandhagen? If so, that might be the one good tube that came off of my O-25...

That might be it, then. If it is, I'm glad it went to a good home.

If memory serves, it was the bottom tube on an O-25; the top tube was certified as hopeless, so I had John replace them with Bach 50 tubes. The end result is an odd hybrid that somehow manages to be either too big or too small (sometimes both at the same time) for just about everything other than fourth trombone (lowest tenor in a six part choir) at Bones West.

That's pretty cool! I guess the only issue is when you are looking for more leadpipes. If starting with conventional sizes, you could reduce a .562 leadpipe down or expand a .547 leadpipe out.

I don't think you have enough brands on that slide yet. You should put a Shires crook on it or something.

He could pull the long spit valve with the release button from a B&S!
