Who here playes in shows? and what shows have you done?

I will play in a show orchestra, but only if there really is no one else avalable. Mainly because my career ambition is to be a stage technitian, and I spend too much time watching and doing tech things and not enought time concentrating on the music.

i love shows....

Babes in Arms was my first show.

TONS of hits in that one... to augment a not-too-hot storyline... like most musicals, i suppose. lol

oh i did Fame, also.

my one and only tenor trombone musical... thank the lucky stars... no-one should ever hear me squeak out such atrocious high(for me) notes!!! FORTUNATELY the volume level was so loud i could let 'em rip like Fred Wesley!!! well, not EXACTLY... minus a few right notes.

Fame has some doozies of high notes. Fortunatly when I did it as a school show, the school brass teacher was able to play the high parts on french horn.

Babes in Arms I agree that the story line is a bit thin, and the scores that we have are hopeless. The photocopying (by the people that the theatre company has hired them off) has cut off alot of key changes, and there are several parts where the score is almost un readable by cuts made by other people and have not been rubbed out but photocopyed   .

I don't usually play in shows, but i do perform in them, or i do tech.

I played 3rd trombone in Anything Goes. That's it for now.  

The Music Man and Sugar is all I've done. However, there are usually two a year at my school, so that list will quickly expand.

I enjoy playing shows now and then. I don't do too many because I work very early in the morning, so those late nights really get me down after a couple weeks.

They get a bit long. Especially night after night.

I did Lakme by Puccinni, and the highlight of that rather odd opera was when the female lead killed herself. See, she was wearing an "I dream of Jeanie" type outfit, decently low cut, and her spot for convusions and such was in direct line of sight for the low brass and percussion. Made our night. She even died in a single aria! Wow! I don't quite get the thing about a french guy writting about englishmen in india, but hey, it's opera.

I also did "The Tender Land" by Copland. Great music, but the 2.5 hour plot was nicely reduced to a single paragraph in the programs. They didn't miss much either. And there was no revealing clothing in that one.   This one was a nice on to play while intoxicated. During intermission on rehersals, the first trumpet and I went to a nearby bar and threw back a couple beers before playing the second half. Then it just flew by.

The others, I was in the chorus rather then the pit, so it's a bit different.

Operas can just take a LOT of time.

Depends wether you do them with a professional company or an amature company.

Here it is standard practice to give the musicians about $8-$10 a performance. But in other parts musicians may not get anything for shows.

I've only done 2 musicals they are ones nobody else mentioned so I'll list them:

The Grass Harp
I Do! I Do!

The Grass Harp was pretty weird.  I was a freshman in College and truthfully was not playing that well; I was suprised when they called me back for I Do! I Do!  a year later but by then I was playing a lot better.  All the professional musicians in this pit orchestra were excellent so we sounded pretty darned good.  I was supposed to play Guys and Dolls the next year but the music director couldn't figure out how to get in touch with me (Summer and my contact info changed).

Nope, for the past couple summers- up until this one- I've been the steady summer trombone player at the Opera House Theatre Company down in Wilmington.

I think Sean Devlin or some of the symphony folk have the slots lined up for Greensboro. They tend to use students more, so I'd still guess Sean.

Which I prefer in this case, because when we played "Gypsy" the director had someone rewrite the last major song- the strip show- for some odd reason. My part suddenly went from doodling around in the background to "OH GOD, IT'S A TROMBONE!!!" I was torn between attempting to catch of glimpse of those pasties on my rests and rattling the stage when playing.

Urinetown is fantastic. Small group: Two lead books: low brass and woodwind plus rythm section
Low Brass is Bass bone, tenor and Euphonium. Great parts.

The latter, the trombone only comes in after the interval, the pit was full and so I sat in the subterranean corridor leading to the pit, behind the conductor who had one hand in front directing the stage and pit, and one behind him directing me!

It's a shame you can't tag members here, but for Stewbones43, you know the Brewhouse pit, and it was Brian Cresswell. And yes, alto clef 

Isn't Don Giovanni 3 trombones used for the Statue?  Way at the end of the whole thing?
