What's a good replacement slide crook for Bach 12?
I have a Bach 12LT slide that needs a slide end crook. I could just order a new stock one, but I wonder if there is a similar crook that's slightly wider? Also I've heard that Bach used the same slide crook for all the small bores, so that on the 12 the stock crook is slightly under size. I don't want anything too large but it would be nice to have one that is a good match for the Bach 12 .500 bore slide. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

3B crook is pretty popular on those, I think.

If you want something different, go with the 3B crook like Burgerbob said. If you want something that keeps the horn more like a Bach, then you can go with OEM or a similar part from MK Drawing.

3b crook is a popular mod to the 16m at .508 , along with pulling the stubby lead pipe
The 12 is .500 so a 2b plus crook would be ideal

The crook will make the horn feel *very* different. I did a lot of experimenting with crooks on my small Bachs, and it will totally change how the horn responds and plays - Just FYI. If you like the "Bach" vibe, you'd be better off doing OEM or MK Drawing.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look at the MK offerings and see if they have one perhaps slightly wider and perhaps a tiny bit larger in bore than the stock Bach. BTW, what should the inner diameter of slide crook be for a .500 bore slide? Thanks.

For a while DJ Kennedy had a "wide glide" (wider than normal) crook for small bore instruments. I think it went some 75 mm rather than the standard 65 mm. If you try a wider slide crook you need to consider two things:
1. The overall length of the instrument will be longer. You may need to make an adjustment to the tuning slide length or the hand slide length.
2. The slide braces need to be longer to accommodate the wider crook. Some 3 part braces can be adjusted, but one part braces may need to be replaced.

On 12 is better a king 2b plus crook... Many do that and me too in the past and plays great...

Modelerdc, Bach 12 slide tubes are generally .540" ID, stock bach crooks were .522" id. Wide glides (all gone now, kanstul msde ek and BAC couldnt find my die when they bought kanstuls tooling) were .547 with a 4inch center to center, which yeilded a span of 3.4" or so. I am going to have another maker repop wide glides next year (not BAC), price point like the originals 90 bucks bare with machined ferrules.
For now, a Shires .500 bore crook would be close as well as some Conn (maybe a student line part). The conn based Bach soloist usa of a few years back had a nice nickel crook that woukd fit the bill.
Good luck,
Benn

Conn would be a good in-between solution.

I understand that to an air flow, a sharp bend is a restriction, but to a sound wave it looks like an expansion. I think our focus is really the sound wave so it's not necessarily true that a crook should be bigger. Too bad it's not convenient to do A-B tests on a crook.

Back in the early to mid 2000`s, I had an Lt16M that I had modified.
I had 3B crooks put on the hand slide and tuning slide.
and a Kanstul/Herrick H8 Leadpipe put in.
This horn was soooooo open and free playing. The upper range just jumped out.
Kind of wish I never sold it

Sign me up for a couple. I've been waiting for this. I don't remember what for any longer, but I need to have a couple of these around. Maybe another 6h project or a 32h or a 3b. I put my first one on a 10h, and then stupidly traded it away.octavposaune wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 8:04 pm I am going to have another maker repop wide glides next year (not BAC), price point like the originals 90 bucks bare with machined ferrules.

Oh hell yeah, I missed out on those crooks at the time. I would love to put a wider nickel one on my 500/525 slide.

I put a 2b crook on my 8, it is amazing. Get a 2b+ crook, that is far and away your best bet.

I've found success with 3b crooks.
