I will be hosting a free Zoom workshop on brass embouchure pedagogy on Saturday, April 17, at 1:30 PM Eastern time It will start with a presentation on basic brass embouchure patterns and the pedagogical implications of understanding these types. We'll follow up with a Q&A session. If you have your instrument with you we'll spend some time at the end playing "guess the embouchure type."

In 1997, while working on my doctorate at Ball State University, I was fortunate enough to get a lesson with Doug Elliott, which transformed my playing. A year later I interviewed Doug for my dissertation, "The correlation between Doug Elliott's embouchure types and selected playing and physical characteristics among trombonists." The information that Doug has shared with me, and many other people on this forum and elsewhere, is not well understood by the field as a whole. However, it is no more difficult to follow than basic music theory and is something that even non-brass playing band directors can implement in their teaching.

The workshop has filled up (I capped it at 20 participants). Since there seems to be enough interest I am considering running another one at a later date. If you're interested and weren't able to make it into this workshop and would like me to do another one feel free to let me know here.

Really enjoyed this workshop! I know it was intended to be focused on pedagogy, but as someone recently returning to the horn after a 20 year break, I had several light bulb moments in the presentation and ensuing discussion, which I can apply directly to my own comeback chops. After a little experimentation this evening, I believe I may have been fighting my natural embouchure 20 years ago. I'll keep working on it, but things felt much easier after a couple of adjustments. Thanks for hosting this.

Will a recording of the workshop be available?

I hope a recording is available. I lost the connection during the medium low placement section, and it never came back.

I did not record it, partly because I anticipated that there would some things that I would like to do differently. If you did attend (even just part of it), I'd love to hear your feedback to help me make improvements to the presentation.

I will post about that on my blog and here to make sure that you get the opportunity to join. Maybe in about a month, to give me some time to rework some things.

The workshop was very informative. Some aspects I knew from previous work with Doug; others were less familiar to me. Very helpful!

I agree! Very informative and built on things that I have picked up from Doug.

The part I saw was well done, good visuals, good audio (something rare on the internet), and good information.
