Tribute:
Among many, many other pieces, Sammy Nestico composed this trombone solo and dedicated it to his instructor, Mathew "Matty" Shiner. It was all the rage when I was in high school.
RIP Sammy Nestico

We will all miss Sammy. Can't tell you how much I enjoyed meeting him nearly 6 years ago to celebrate his 91st birthday. What a wonderful man, and colorful character, with great stories to tell!
My hero. R.I.P., Sammy.

Every time the band leader called a Nestico arrangement, I smiled because I knew it was going to be a great chart to play. Every time!
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are still missing!

Did you know that he was originally a trombone player? Superb arranger--probably the most prolific big-band arranger on the face of the earth.

Sammy was a great trombonist, check out his solo recordings when he was with the airmen of note, prior to that he was with the Marines Presidents own
On his Facebook page he told the story of having to take special leave to tour with the Tommy Dorsey Orch in the early 50's playing TD's book when Tommy was hospitalised .....Sammy played a 2b FYI

Sammy was drafted into the Army in WWII. I have never seen any details of that time, but heard him say it. Then he joined the Airmen of Note in the early 50's as an arranger, then the Marine Band in the late 60's.

A couple years ago, I went to an Airmen of Note concert in San Diego. Sammy was in attendance, and the attitude of the band when he went on stage after the concert?

Sammy wrote a great autobiography (I think in 2009), The Gift of Music. Great read. Everything you wanted to know about this great man - including his wonderful sense of humor. The book was self published - I loaned out my signed copy and haven't seen it since. But I'm sure that his wife Shirley has more copies.

I remember playing Nestico arrangements back in highschool and loving them. Now my son is playing Nestico arrangements in his high school band. Timeless music. RIP
