Large mouthpiece for King 3B+ with F trigger

Post by SupetTed »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to trombone, playing on a King 3B+ with F trigger (I believe it's 0.525 bore?), and I'd like some advice on which mouthpieces to use with the horn. (I've played euphonium for many years)

Size 4 (DE 102) is the best rim for me.

For small punchy stuff I'm happy with a Bach 4C.
I also love the Bach 4, it's the sound I want for solos, but I don't know if it's the right sound in a group situation?

Would a small shank 4G work with the horn like mine or is it too big (i.e. diminishing returns)? I tried 5G and whilst the tone is less bright than the Bach 4, I can't get a big sound out of it.

I'm also reading conflicting information that a Schilke 51 rim can be considered similar to both 5G or 4G?

Cheers,
Ted

I play a Bach 36 with a Wick 4BS for classical. I use a 4C equivalent for Jazz Band, but the 4BS works good there as well. Your 2125F should work with those as well.

A Schilke 51 is generally 5G size and a 52 is 4G size.

Get a DE setup, probably D, E, F cup. On my 3B/F (not the big boy .525), the D cup gets a pretty big sound without sacrificing too much. With the .525 an F cup may work. I use an F+ on my Bach 36, for instance.

XT 102, E, E4 would make you happy.

The LT version of that set works great on my Bach 36.
