I don't remember his specific horn but it's a large bore .547

The one he's played the most over the last 30-40 years is a Yamaha. Not sure of the model. He played a Rath for a while, but I believe he went back to the Yamaha.

It is for sure a Yamaha large bore, at least according to what he told me in January. I would guess a 643...didn't get a model number.

In his bio, he talks about getting an 88H in his younger days. A fair amount of water under the bridge since then.

The last time I saw him a couple of years ago, it was the large bore Yamaha. It will be two years this January.

Nope! While Fred has used a 3B, 36, and 88H to great effect over the decades, he’s definitely been on a Yamaha 643 (with custom blue lacquer on bell). Played it on Colbert this week.

He often played a Yamaha 643 large-bore with F-att.

Edit: Typo fixed.

One of his horns is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. .547 Yamaha 88H style horn.

Yup. He sat in with the band. They get lots of names to sit in for a night.

I saw the horn. Looked nice. Thanks for the ID.

I saw that too, and the Blue bell was eye-catching. Didn't get to hear too m much from him, except when the band was still playing when coming back from a commercial. Sounded good for those short segments!

I am seeing him in Pittsburgh next week!

The non-colored lacquer horn he seems to play in all of the recent videos I have seen appears to be a Yamaha 620 to my eye.

At one point, he played a 36B; saw one of his former horns at the Smithsonian in December.

I've hear he plays a smaller mouthpiece on that big horn. Anyone know what mouthpiece he uses?

Fred's 81st birthday coming up on July 4.

He's surely played many different trombones in his career.

Here is the full performance on Colbert. I love the fact that they put the band playing during the commercial breaks on YouTube, plus he always gives a shout out when one of the band members has a new release or big gig coming up.
