Has anyone thought of a metal straight mute that collapses like on of those camping cups? I think it would save some serious gig bag space. I imagine the top section collapsing into the bell end of the mute.

I think with the vibration of the trombone, those parts would rattle.

I like it. Now trying to figure out how to push it in without collapsing it.

Where would the cork go?

Make some poster board mockups. Maybe even fiberglass them. Hmm, sounds like a fun holiday vacation project...
