I'm looking at buying a used Bach 42. I tried using bachloyalist to date it based on the serial numbers but I wasn't confident so I thought I'd post it here.

Slide serial: 384xx
Rotor valve serial: 853xx

It's a Bach 42 with open wrap and a rotor. The bell says Elkhart, IN but it doesn't say corporation.

Any idea what year this horn was made?

I think that previous owner/s matched parts from different eras. Slide from 70's and bell from 90's or later.

The number on the valve is not a "serial number" as such, more of a production number so as to keep the rotor/casing pairs together. They aren't "tracked" like slide serials are. So using the slide serial number should give the age f the slide pretty well. (Don't have my lists with me at present to check, sorry) The only other clue is the bell engraving. If it doesn't say "Corporation", then it is a later Elkhart bell, but difficult to pin it down as specifically as a slide.

The 42BO is a '90s creation, unless I'm mistaken, so the slide and bell are mismatched. No big deal, IMO.

The slide is from the late 1970's.  Probably an improvement..

I got a 36BO recently and while I really like it, I hate the open wrap design. How hard would it have been do make a wrap that doesn't stick 4" out from the back of the horn?

Look at any Yamaha F-attachment like the 620 (or my 682).  Look at the Massimo LaRosa wrap by Shires.  Lots of examples.  Personally I like my Bach 36C wrap (standard, just like the B).

You mean like the standard wrap that they have made forever and that works really, really well?...  Yeah, open wraps are marketing nonsense, in my opinion.
