Quote from: Bach42BOS on Aug 17, 2010, 11:32PMwhat an evening! just got home a little while ago from my storage unit in which i finally got to meet Chris Amemiya! what an amazing player and nice guy! i couldn't believe what he was able to do with the horns! i have never personally seen or heard anyone play like him. hearing and seeing someone play like that in person is just mind-boggling and life changing lol! hopefully he chimes in a little later with some reviews!
Drew, I'm blushing. Wow, you have an amazing collection of horns and a number of bona fide collector's items. I think the horn that most spoke to me was one of the Williams 4s. That was a spectacular horn... dark compact sound like a Williams but it didn't really make you work overtly hard. The Burbank 8 was just terrific too... it plays substantially purer than my Burbank 9. Just a great sounding horn with that big old bell. You had a couple of 6's that were also fantastic. I just wished I had had a chance to play on your Williams bass trumpet... next time I'm in Hawaii 'kay?
And to the few folks who have posted queries about whether Williams from LA, Burbank, Tennessee, Tulsa play better/differently from one another, I think this largely depends on your own taste and preferences. There are good Williams horns and bad ones but you'd expect that from any hand crafted horn since no two horns are identical. I've played horns from all those manufacturing sites that were fine horns. And insofar as how they play relative to Kings, Bachs, Kanstuls, Shires, Conns, Yamahas, again, personal choice. Williams horns are certainly not the freest blowing horns and they can make you work hard for that dark, compact sound.

I actually didn't like my 6's (I have 2) when I first got them; they felt tight. I didn't use them for several years; even sold one and then bought it back. I finally took one on tour so I'd be forced to use it... and I'm still using it.

I have to get over there and check out his Burbank 8.
I was blowing an Olds Opera for four years before getting my Burbank 6. I found my 6 to be freer blowing than the much larger bored Opera but I may have had a bad one. My trombone teacher in college didn't like it's sound and encouraged me to find another horn which, fortunately, turned out to be my 6.

It's listed at the bottom of my posts: XT Lexan N104 rim, D cup, D2 shank. That's a very large rim size on a cup that's sort of like a 6-1/2AL with a smaller throat and backbore.

I did see that but thought that it couldn't be right because the rim size was so big. Was that what you were playing in Seattle when you sat in at Tula's?

Yes, I use that rim on all tenor and alto playing. A big rim solves a lot of problems for those who need it, and there's no downside. It sounds and feels "normal" to me.

John Duda has recently moved from Tulsa to Eugene (OR) and is back in the business of making/selling stuff. In addition to building Calicchio trumpets he is the guru behind the new Williams trombones.
He has just about finished building a new Williams 6. No takers yet.
He is a good guy and very knowledgeable about building brass instruments. He can be reached through Marcinkiewicz MP.

Hey Chris,
Shhhh... I might want to buy that 6 for myself. Now that I'm in better shape than I was a year and a half ago, I again checked out a friend's Calicchio Williams 6 against my Burbank 6 and darn if the Calicchio wasn't just as good, at least to the best of my abilities and discernment.

I suspect it was cut down to allow for extended positions. The inner lower tube and upper outer tube of the tuning slide are still short, which would limit travel.

Drool drool drool... That horn looks like it's in awfully nice shape considering that it has to be more than 35 years old. Do you think that it was refurbished somewhere along its existence? Also, do you think it's really a gold plated bell? Or maybe just gold washed like with King 3Bs that I've seen. Not that I really know the difference, you understand, but I would think that a gold plated bell would be prohibitively expensive.
Aloha,
Richard

well, gold plating on what was at the time a high dollar custom instrument doesn't seem so bad... and it's an option most high end instrument manufacturers still offer, even with the price of gold being as high as it is.
and gold doesn't tarnish, which might explain the clean look of the instrument.
i wouldn't mind having a gold-plated 6 fall into my hands. wouldn't mind one bit...

Hi Chris,
Pardon me, but that looks more like a Donelson, Tennessee Williams 6. My first clue was the water key, then the Donelson, TN stamp on the bell stem. However, just to confuse me and throw me off the scent, I saw the Calicchio inscription on the bell but couldn't make out what's written below that. Any idea what's going on?

Richard

I suspect the bell was made at Calicchio in Hollywood and shipped to Donelson where the horn was assembled.

You have it backwards. Caliccio was after Donelson and most or all of the horns they "made" were merely assembled from parts that Jay and MaryLee Armstrong made in Donelson TN. It's unfortunate that they were not able to make it a financial success because they were very meticulous and built some good horns.
Caliccio really contributed nothing to the Williams name during the short time they had it.

I would like to add a coda to what Doug said. I feel that when John Duda bought Calicchio and moved it to Tulsa, the Williams trombones he made were of excellent quality. The Tulsa Calicchio Williams 6 that my friend has is every bit as good as my Burbank 6 and the 8 that I got from John is also a great horn. (If I didn't already own two 6's, I'd be very tempted to buy a (now Oregon) Calicchio 6.) I haven't played any Calicchio Williams horns from the Hollywood period (I believe different owner -- not John Duda) but I have heard that they weren't very good. I hope John Noxon will jump in if I'm wrong.
Aloha,
Richard

You are absolutely right. When the tooling etc left Donnellson and came to LA what was produced here was horrible. John Duda has made some excellent horns and tried to keep the name alive. Doug said it well!

Today was an exciting day - I took delivery on a brand spanking new Williams 6 model made by John Duda. This is only the second Williams 6 made in Canby, OR after John moved here.
Right now it has no engraving, and it is raw brass. I am considering sending it off for engraving and silver plating. But right now I want to play it, not send it anywhere.
Couple photos attached of my new baby. Also a brief sound clip (end of Martin Ballade). Deficiencies in the sound should be attributed to my playing, but the glories in the sound are Williams. Plays with a much bigger sound than my other .500 horns, IMO.

Mafia connection reveals.... no 3 !!!!!
It's a 1,2,3 4!
I had the honor of meeting Doug Elliot yesterday afternoon, and listen to him play and perform with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. Doug is top class! and very cool.
He measured my Williams bore size, with some very specific tooling.
Turns out.... what I thought I had was a Williams 3.
Doug revealed that no, it was actually a Williams 4 .491 bore. How cool was that!
Then, at the Concert last evening, Doug played my LA 4, along with his LA 6.
The man can make a slide smoke!!!!!! Grovey old school swing/big band - loved it Doug!
WOW, what a great time!!!!
More to come... I gottas get 2 church (runnin late).

Polished up enough though, to be ready for rehearsal tomorrow....
