What about the nickle outers on my horn? Was that ever an option? Did earl ever use nickle tubes? Why is it I have a .522 bore horn with a 7 1/2 inch bell?

Hello All,
Quinntheskimo has one of the model 10 bass in all nickel, including the bell and rotor tubing. The valve wrap looked very similar to the Olds GR and Conn 72H.
Quinn seemed to think it was a very rare option.
Dan is your trombone marked as an 8? You can cut a bell to any diameter on the original mandrel, or a seriously damaged flair could have been cut down. Food for thought.

The .522 and the 7.5 bell were left overs from the Wallace days. They were made that way for a long time under the Wallace Williams name. Spike Wallaces horn was a straight .565 bore, no trigger tenor. Imagine how huge and crazy that was in 1928? I have seen nickel tubes before, only one or two like that. Most horns under Wallace were Gold plated or Silver, brass was rare for the late Wallace horns. The beginning of Williams horns were brass and stayed that way to the end. There was a couple of Silver and gold but not many Williams were that way.

Ben, My horn is marked with an "L" above the serial number. I am VERY certain it was never cut down.
I took it to Dan Oberloh's today. Gladly he said it didn't need any work.
I also let two VERY qualified professional players test it out. Ed Ulman, and Chris Amemiya. They both thought the horn was great. And they both sounded awesome on the horn. We took some video of Chris for the world to hear how this one sounds in front of a pro player. It should be up for viewing soon.
Also I think the outers are original. The horn was refinished at one point in it's life, Perhaps the 50's but even Dan said the person who did the work did a nice job. It really is a thing of beauty. There is some spotting on the bell flair with some minor loss of lacquer, but all in all it is fine.

Since there's been some discussion about cases for Williams trombones and since I said I'd post pictures of the coffin case that came with my '71 Burbank 6, here are a couple of shots.

My pleasure. You got a beauty. It plays really well too. If I didn't know it I wouldn't have pegged this as a .520 horn since it feels smaller and has a remarkably quick response. The wider width of the slide gives it away though... and of course one can honk some pretty low notes with good resolution because it is a .520 bore. The overtone series seemed similar to my Williams 6, though upon listening to the vid I notice that I'm a tad flat on the Gs above the staff. I am playing on an old Bach 9 (NY) mouthpiece which seemed to be a pretty good match for this horn. I think this horn would be great for lead work in a big band and for solo work too. Dan, you done good! I am quite envious.

from mike's facebook yesterday:
Mike Corrigan Didn't want to announce it prematurely (to avoid more competition from showing up...) BUT Andy and I went to the Calicchio/Earl Williams bank foreclosure auction yesterday and we scored some amazing pieces of history!! We'll continue using some equipment that has been being used since the 1920's to create superb hand crafted brass instruments. We also have hoards of original parts!

John Duda still has all the mandrels and tooling for Williams horns. He left junk behind that he did not have room for. Nothing could be manufactured with what is left. The bells from Donelson and some other misc junk left behind. At least somebody got it that appreciates what it is!

Don't forget that in side-by-side tests, the Kanstul Model 1606 often compared more than favorably to vintage Williams trombones, and is said by many to be superior to the modern Williams 6 (with all due respect to our gentlemen competitor from Tulsa, et al).
all the best!

regardless of what was saved and what gets done with it, congrats to saving the stuff from the dust bin. There is a Jazz History in KC, perhaps something might fit in there if nothing else.

There was 2 on e-bay. Both buy it now's.
A Tenn 8 bell section, which sold....
and an old beater Wallace and Williams like Dan owned, but the dude wanted WAY to much for it (like $1,400 - it was beat up real bad). I don't think it sold.
Check w/ DJ.
I think he has a line on a couple that's "on the market"

what an evening! just got home a little while ago from my storage unit in which i finally got to meet Chris Amemiya! what an amazing player and nice guy! i couldn't believe what he was able to do with the horns! i have never personally seen or heard anyone play like him. hearing and seeing someone play like that in person is just mind-boggling and life changing lol! hopefully he chimes in a little later with some reviews!
