my name is zac i have already met some of you and some of you have helped me out a bit.
i play trombone 2, 3, or bass trombone parts on my 1970's king 4b f attachment tenor, some of you have already helped me deciding what bass trombone to buy i am hopping to find another king trombone maybe a 7 or 8B.
i play in the millenium marching band (new south wales state marching band) i am auditioning for the state wind orchestra on bass trombone. i also play in my senior school ensambles and bass trombone in the school stage band

Hi everyone.

My name is Jeffrey Acosta, and im in my Last Year of High School at Maples Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Uh, I dunno what else to say, so Ill just say some basic stuff about me I guess :p

Im in 3 Jazz Bands, 3 Improv Groups, 1 Concert Band, 1 Concert Choir and 1 Chamber Choir at my school. I also auditioned for the Honor Band for the Province, and I am the Lead Trombonist in the Manitoba Senior Honor Jazz Band, and the previous year before that when I tried out, I was third trombone, so yay me. I also had my worst audition for Brandon University, and made it in. yay me again.

I know how to play the Trombone (Mine is a Yamaha Xeno YSL-882GO), and I also taught myself how to play Trumpet and French Horn and I also taught myself how to read treble clef.

I also dont have any private lesson experience at all (which people I tell find it extremely surprising seeing as I have good tone and my tone in my upper register, up to  ). For concerts, I play at hte local optimist festival in town, along with high school concerts, and I have also been to the International Music Camp in 2008 for Jazz Week, and I have played in Brandon, Manitoba and Banff, Alberta. Last Sunday, My school held a concert at a downtown venue outside of school where we played the ENTIRE Basie-Straight Ahead CD in order, and I played lead on every single song with only less then a minute in between each song, with a 5 minute break after Magic Flea, and also playing 3 more songs on lead before the CD Album list concert as an opening act and it was such a fun time. I also designed the posters to promote the show by putting our jazz bands sweater on Count Basie on the cover of the album. I can show it if anyones interested :p

So yeah, thats basically it for me. Sorry if I ask dumb questions, Sometimes I dont know what some musical terms are, or some of the more popular method books or stuff like that are and etc, but I am extremely keen to learn.

I cant wait to learn more and be apart of this community

Just so I know, is it against the rules to reply to a topic that hasnt been replied to in over a year? Because theres a thread about Leather Trombone Grips that I wanted to reply to, but if I remember correctly, its last post was in like, 2007, so I wasnt sure if I was allowed to reply to it or not because it has been so long.

You're welcome to respond to any topic you like. I've just resurrected one from 2008! It's much better than starting a new topic, because it will already contain answers to questions which may interest other new members. The only problem with these older topics is that any links within them may no longer work, and with some really old ones, the fonts can be a bit odd. Go for it....

Hi everyone.  My name is Kristopher, I joined the forum a few months ago but just now found this new members thread.

I'm a quarter-life career changer; I foolishly stopped playing trombone after high school and followed a different path in college and my career. I started playing again fairly recently and will be starting college again this fall, this time as a music ed major. My primary interest is jazz, but I do also enjoy concert band and orchestra music.

Also, I wanted to say "Thanks!" to the regulars and mods here who have made the forum such a great resource. I lurked here for years before finally joining; it's really amazing how much trombone knowledge there is here!

Welcome Kristopher, it is a pleasure to have another trombone player join. You can learn about EVERYTHING on this forum. Good luck in college! I am in only in high school.

Hi, Kristopher.  Not only good to see another "face" here, but one who is repenting from abandoning his trombone and is even a Texan!  I got my B.A. in TX and was paperwork away from an M.A. at SFA when we moved to TN.  Never got back to finish it, though.

Not in eastern WA - in SW OR.  But I have a son in Federal Way.  Still not eastern WA but a lot closer than I am!  He plays French horn, though.  Not trombone.

Yeah, I know.  He's always wanted challenges in his life and what better challenge than French horn?  After all, you start out with three strikes against you: you have to play left-handed (okay, that's not a strike if you're left-handed to begin with), you point it backward, and then stick your hand up the bell.

Hi Norm. I attended summer band camps at SFA during high school and was really impressed with their music department. I would have applied there if I weren't tied to DFW due to family reasons. East Texas is really beautiful, I always enjoy driving through that area.

Actually i'm gonna be a javelina.  I'm going to a branch of Texas A@M University, not the one in college station.  The university im going to is in kingsville.  I actually prefer the one i am going to.  Thanks for the reply and interest

My name is Bradley Madsen - I'm a new member, but have read and "lurked" for years now.

I'm a graduate of New School Jazz ('05), currently doing Master's work in Classical bone at Brooklyn College, and am trying to break free of the shackles of a day job in order to blow my shape-changer for a living. Currently I play tenor bone (King 2B's and a Bach 42B) and euphonium (ugly but servicable Conn), but I'm adding a bass to my arsenal very soon, and hopefully after that a Tuba.

Jaime Parker here, and as per the instructions for new members, I'm introducing myself to the forum. I've been spying on you guys for years, but haven't felt the urge to join until recently. Quite a site! I love all the wonderful buttons.  Anyway, I plan to explore the site's wonderful resources and hopefully make a few (semi-) useful contributions in the near future.

About me:

I play the trombone. Tenor, mostly. I guess you could say I'm one of the world's very few full-time big band trombonists. I've been on the road for the last two years with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, in which I play 2nd trombone. I also sing with the Moonlight Serenaders and I'm the band's Assistant Road Manager. Let's see, other stuff I've done: I played lead & solo trombone for the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra for a number of years, was the 2nd trombonist for the Greeley Philharmonic for a few more years and have done a bunch of commercial work in Orlando and Denver, as well. I did my undergrad degree at the University of Central Florida with Roy Pickering, and have a MM with a dual-emphasis in jazz studies and classical performance from the University of Northern Colorado, where I studied with Nat Wickham, Dana Landry and many other fine musicians.

Umm...what else? I once randomly met Jim Pugh in an elevator in Nagoya, I can touch my nose with my tongue, I can belch the alphabet in 17 different languages, and I'm a great kisser. OK, none of that's true except for the Jim Pugh thing. I DO run the GMO's brand-new Facebook page, and I'd love for everyone to go check it out. Can I get away with posting a link here?     My name is Scott "Rev" Wrona from just outside good ol Detroit Michigan. In 2007 I formed a jazz band and from 2007-2009 I lead it as their drummer and manager.  In 2009 my carpal tunnel was getting rather bad in my wrist so I had to finally give up playing the drums.   I love playing music so I decided to go back to something I dabbled in back in grade school and an instrument my band didn't have...the trombone. 

   Since Nov. of 09 I have been working my ass of on the trombone getting back in to the grove and trying to keep up with my band mates.  Fortunately I all ready knew the songs, my music theory and all the jazz (haha pun).  I still knew my slide positioning with a little reminder and just been working on my endurance and embouchure.

There ya go thats me and my trombone in a nutshell.

Glad to have you posting!  Thankfully the carpal tunnel hasn't hit me or I'd have to get rid of my drum set too.  But I was doing trombone for a while before I took up drums.  Either you have your photo flipped horizontally or you play left-handed.  You have some good company in that department.  I've played straight tenor left-handed some and it's fun, but that doesn't work very well with valves.  I mostly play right-handed.

My mother was born and raised down the road a ways in Jackson.  Had a sister-in-law and brother-in-law-in-law (?) who lived just outside Detroit.  Don't remember which suburb, but I believe it was a two-word name.

I decided to go look at a map to see if anything rang a bell.  It wasn't a two-word town, it was Warren.

I have a few friends with carpal tunnel.  A couple of them - both clarinet players - ended up having surgery on both and it seems to have helped them a lot.  The pain was gone and they're back playing their clarinets.  Unfortunately they're probably beyond trying to convert them to trombone.

Ladies and Gentlemen of The Trombone Forum, it's nice to meet you.  My name is John Lugo, also known as MuscleMouth.  I have over 25 years of playing experience and over 15 years of professional stage experience.  I currently perform with 5 bands in Los Angeles on a regular basis and am a professional studio trombonist.  I've been to The Trombone Forum several times for research purposes, but have never sat down and become a part of it.  Now that I've been self employed with my trombone for several years I feel I can contribute, as well as learn.  I hold a BM in Composition and Theory from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and graduated Cum Laude in 2004.  Though I was not a Performance major, I was Principal in the UTSA Orchestra and Lead in the UTSA Jazz Ensemble due to my prior stage experience and knowledge of the instrument.  I won the San Antonio (SA) News 'Horn Player of the Year' award for 1994, ten years before I graduated from music school.  I'm thankful for UTSA, I went to a good school and got a great education, even if our mascot is a road runner.  I hit the ground running when I got to LA a couple of years ago and haven't had much chance to rest since.  I'm the proud owner of a 1942 Conn 24H, which I personally consider to be the most well made trombone ever, and I play it with a big Schilke 51D mouthpiece.  It opens up the low end and makes the high notes sing.  I'm a composer and arranger, as well as a lover of funk music.  With all of these combinations of experiences in the 2 years I've been in LA I've worked with members of Fishbone, met Sly Stone, worked with members of Parliament/Funkadelic and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, been in music videos with Mary J. Blige and Robi Draco Rosa, and led a horn section on the Vans Warped Tour performing my arrangements.  I could go on and on, but I'm too busy going on and on.  I am a solo artist under the name MuscleMouth and a composer in the classical sense under the name John A. Lugo II.  My music is on E-TIP Records.  I also give trombone, theory and composition lessons, have a beautiful wife named Sandra, and two beautiful daughters named Elizabeth and Samantha.

New to the site and was looking for any postings on Buddy Morrow. Jamie Parker's was good. "Bend it to your will" Have been reminicising on my days on the Iron Lung with Buddy, Leif, Dennis T. (all the guys from Buffalo), Lyn, TK, Kevin, and the guys back when we earned a whopping $250.00/wk. Maybe I'll dig out my cassette's "Live on the Iron Lung" with some good stories on Buddy's years with his own band. Rick Mizell
