Hi all,

I'm an old bone player, on-again off-again since around 1975. Played in HS, did not play in college, picked back up again in graduate school to play with a "community" group made up of lots of alumni from local-ish college bands around the San Francisco Bay Area. The group is called California Repercussions. That group has been a blast, but I've been on a break from it for a couple of years, and am just now working to pick up where I left off. I'm going to retire within the next year or so, so I'm expecting to have more time/energy for practicing and potentially joining some other local groups.

I'm in the Sacramento area, so if there are any other bone folks floating around here and you want to get into some duets or something, reach out!

I'm Mike in Edinburgh, Scotland. I play bass trombone in a few local groups, mostly orchestras and big bands. I've lurked on this forum for years and learned a huge amount here, so I thought it might be nice to get a bit more involved.

G'day folks. Kevin from Rockhampton (Aust) here. I used to frequent The Trombone Forum back in the day and only recently found this site. I learnt tbn back in high school in mid-70s and have played in community bands ever since - nearly 40 years now. I now play either tenor or bass, depending on who's missing from rehearsal, including covering for the Eb bass player.

Even though I'm well into retirement, I still enjoy learning.

I originally played trombone in junior high/high school from 1958 to about 1963. When arthritis in my fingers caused a drastic tapering off of my guitar playing, I picked up trombone again about a year ago. I joined a local Colorado community band last September, and enjoy playing more now than in my beginning years. I hope to get to the point where I can play New Orleans/Trad jazz one of these days.

Through band and this site, I'm finding there is a lot more to learn than I was aware of in H.S. pep band, and expect to enroll in private lessons before too long.

I've been hanging around here for a while as a guest but decided I should join again. I generally prefer to look and listen so probably won't post very often - I need one of those "introverted (aspie) but willing to discuss trombone" shirts

I'm strictly an amateur player who plays for enjoyment. I started playing in 1981 when the trombone chose me at age 11 - band conductor gave it to me because my arm was long enough. first time I showed it to my dad and blew a note he said it sounded like a foghorn Have had periods where I didn't play for a few years, and have often been in bands where I was the only trombone.
My partner also plays which is great I - he started on trumpet as a kid, but has now seen the light and come over to the dark side
I play 1st in a local community concert band, and my partner plays second.
I play bass trom in our local community orchestra and my partner plays second.
I help out sometimes with another little local concert band on tuba but don't always go to rehearsals - there are some ... difficult .... personalities there
I've been playing bass trombone in our local community orchestra for about 7-8 years now - absolutely love it. wish I had been introduced to the bass trombone earlier (I got the chair because our sometimes bass trombone moved away and I had a large bore trigger - a beautiful mid 1970's silver 42B I purchased off DJ through the old trombone forum - in the days when international shipping to down under was still a reasonable price) My partner plays the 42 now and loves it as much as I do. I decided I wanted a double trigger bass - love the low notes and I find going low easy which my partner hates as he'd love to be able to play low but is pretty dismal at it So I bought a Xeno 830 which I absolutely love. its light (for a bass), easy to play, sounds great.

I am currently a Middle School music teacher in Southern California and enjoy playing every time I can. I am mostly playing on a Shires bass. If you're within driving distance from Santa Ana, you should consider joining a bunch of us (typically 30 or more) at Bones West - every Saturday morning from ~9:00am to 11:30am at Musician's Association (AFM) Local 7. Lots of great charts for bass trombone (as well as tenor) - legit and jazz.

Hello all trombone enthusiast. I finally pulled the trigger on registering because i want to ask for advice about a weird old duo gravis bass trombone with one trigger i found in my bands instrument storage. Before that, a bit about my self.

Im 24 years old from Denmark (so excuse my poor writing) who loves playing music in my spare time.
I mostly play the bass trombone, and tenor trombone nowadays, but i started on euphonium. I play in various different bands and orchestras. I play bass trombone in a old time jazz bigband, a small fusion jazz ensemble, and in my marching bands marches through the cities and also our tattoo show. I play my "big" tenor trombone in a New Orleans inspired street parade band, and in a small band where we play for special occasions. I've played piano since i was 9, and started learning percussion at age 15 when i started in marching band before switching to brass.
Right now i also play mallet percussion in my marching bands concert band, because we have a lot of low brass players and no percussion player who could read sheet music.

I've always "lurked" on these forums and different facebook groups, but never actually contributed much. Denmark is quite small and doesn't have a that many brass repair shops, that does custom work, and none of them sells top-end instruments. There's not much online presence in the Danish brass community, so I'm looking forward to learn from the experiences of people from all over. Especially overseas, where marching band culture is just amazing. My marching band has participated in the Calgary Stampede a number of times, and I've had the pleasure of going twice already. Experiencing Canada, and the stampede, has been some of the best experiences of my life.

Hi. I'm a trombone player from NJ, but grew up playing primarily in LA. I have a question. Is it considered good form or bad form to post recordings of your own, versus recordings of other players? Don't want to start off on the wrong foot here. Thanks.

I've been going through the trombone forum since high school and have had a trombone chat account for about a year now but I'm just now needing to post! I'm currently a bass trombonist studying at UNT and I grew up and learned how to play in Las Vegas.

Another newbie, posting to get vetted! I have been Mr. Second Trombone in the Spokane Symphony since 2001 and teach full time at Whitworth University in Spokane.

Hi, this is my first post. I played trombone in Jr and Sr high school in symphonic, marching, and jazz bands as well as in the local youth symphony orchestra. That was from 1970-1979. I stopped playing regularly when I went to college. Now, after 45 years, I have decided to start playing again, just for fun. I have been surprised by how much I remember and by how bad I am!

I loved playing and hope to become proficient enough to enjoy it again.

I've been playing tenor trombone for around a decade at this point, and picked up bass a semester ago. One of the things I'm hoping to get into soon is running my trombone through pedals.

Hey y'all - finally joining _my people_ to look for a small-bore horn for jazz band. Normally I play a K-valved Bach 42 in concert band.

I have been in teaching brass for a good number of years. My major instrument was (is) trombone and I have a King 2B, Bach 16, Olds Ambassadpr, a Martin Committee model, and a Reynolds Argenta. My favorite mouthpiece is a Bach 22C though I used an 11 C for a time. I also have a conical bore Coutieier with reverse slide that is a real beast. For reasons i will not go into, I play left-handed which makes using a horn with the F-attachment a bit awkward. I have been playing
for over 70 years.

Hello! I actually created an account a while ago under my Gmail email, and it won't send me a password reset, and says it's activated, but doesn't seem to be. Not sure what's up... anyway this is under a different email address that I don't use much.

I'm from the midwest. I played in school and some in college. I was a music major but changed to an IT career. The low brass professor took the joy out of it for me and I thought it was a one-off until I read some reviews online about him a year or so ago. Turns out.. it wasn't just me - he killed a lot of dreams. Life got busy, and I stopped playing. My horn was a Yamaha YSL-643R. Had a family, things were tight, so I sold it to a music store. Still somewhat regretting that as I loved that horn. Now.. it's almost 30 years later. Youngest daughter is a music major at a better college with some very welcoming professors. She's a euphonium and trombone player. She encouraged me and we did a quartet for church one Christmas with her trombone. I then played in a pep-band get together for the K-12 that I work at.. and then joined a local community band. I needed a horn of my own then, so I found an Olds Ambassador A20 from 1972. The community band has been great, and I got a small trombone choir for some Christmas carols as a filler for a MS/HS concert between groups. I found I missed having a large bore horn (and I was told I can't have more than one fancy trombone from the Mrs) so I sold the Ambassador to an awesome musician in Detroit and then... found a basically factory new YSL-643 on ebay - it must have been stored for. years in someone's closet as there's not a scratch on it and one tiniest spot of lacquer wear on a hand brace.

Hi everyone! Some of you might remember me from the old Trombone Forum. I got pretty busy with my teaching career and then COVID hit and suddenly it's been four years since I (seriously) played. But I got invited last-minute to a gig and had a ton of fun so I'm getting back in the swing of things. My instrument is an axial-flow Shires tenor (ca. 2006, apparently this is important now!), and I'm currently in-between bass trombones but looking to get a new one.

Local to the PNW and just trying to get back into playing after a lengthy beak, as life happens and I lost major focus on musical study. I have a Conn 88HCL that I got in high school (graduated there in 2008 - how time flies) and just took it in to the tech for the first time since probably 2010 for some much needed service. What I've been able to learn from this website has helped me get motivated to get back into things and practice regularly, though I'm not in any groups or lessons. What a tremendous resource! I started playing the trombone in middle school and continued through my college years before going dormant from trombone playing for many years. I've recently rediscovered my passion for trombone and have spent the last several months starting from "scratch" and re-teaching myself everything from the simple basics of time signatures and counting rhythms, all the way up to practicing exercises I used to play out of Arban's and Rochut for my private studies.

Looking forward to participating on the forum!

I have loved getting back into playing and listening again and have found this forum very informative. Thanks all!!!

Feisty old guy here. I played trombone in grade school, but didn't have the patience back then. I do remember it being a fun instrument to play, and often wished I'd stuck with it. I have played electric bass for some time, so have a reasonable background to build off of, and (PRAISE THE LORD) I never got into TAB notation so have decent familiarity with standard notation and the bass clef.

I have a teacher and an OK starter trombone and look forward to building proficiency. One think I'm finding fun and different is how physical it is to play a horn. I feel much more part of the instrument than with an amplified stringed instrument. (That's fun in its own way!)

My account has been active for a few years now, but I've never had a reason to make a post until now, and I really ought to get my three posts in so I can pursue a classifieds listing I'd been racking my brain for awhile trying to come up with something significant to post, and I'm glad I found this thread started by someone in a similar situation. I sure hope posting comments counts towards that number.

I've been playing for nearly a decade, with the most significant thing to show for it likely being the number of horns I've amassed over that period of time. I don't play as much as I'd like to anymore due to work, but I've been thinking about shifting my priorities around and focusing on music, like I'd wanted to for a number of years. I just recently joined a community band that has rehearsals I can actually make it to with my funky work schedule, so hopefully the horn is on its way to being a bigger part of my life again.

Inferring that 816 refers to KC/ Western MO area?
Lived there for 21 years before moving to where I am now (S.Carolina).
Had similar history - played through college then did not at all for 20 years until I gave into the itch.
After 20 years I think I played long tones and scales for a month just to get some chops back.
When you are ready, there are several community bands in that area to check out for an outlet to play.

Hi there, I was a tuba player, particularly playing in brass bands here in the UK. I retired from playing 30 years ago and became a guitarists. A few years ago I had my arm twisted by friends to play trombone in a big band and I'm loving it. It's been a steep learning curve especially getting to grips with the variety of clefs I have to read as I'm now playing in an orchestra too. Love the forum, loads of info and knowledgeable people.
