Okay since I’ve now found the right thread to introduce myself I’d better do it. I’m a Swedish trombone player and actually joined the forum in 2004 but haven’t posted anything until now. I have studied trombone at the Royal Academy of Stockholm for four years and then worked as a part time musician and a part time teacher for 13 years. I would say I’m a semi-professional player. Since 1996 I’ve been working as a computer consultant. At the moment I’m back to studying again and will get my diploma in engineering in 2007. I hope I can be of use in this forum.

HI everyone!!!! I am from Malaysia. In case you haven't heard of it, it is located just North of Singapore. AM I the first Malaysia to be here?? I am 16 this year, am is still a senior high student. For your info, I played the euphonium for two years, and today, I took my first step in euphonium - trombone doubling!!So there are still many things I dont know. HOw everyone here will help me!!!!I am very interested in music and wish to pursue music to a higher level, but Music scene in Malaysia is tough. Hoping that you all can give me comments on my choice, sice there are many pros among you.

Hey everybody, My name is Chris, but i use the name Kronia for my online things. I live in Oregon, hopefully will go to college in Washington (PLU) next year. I really like living in Oregon for one reason: the Monette shop, I have been there once and met Dave and the crew, really nice guys. I play a Getzen Custom Series 3047 AF with a Doug Elliot LT101, LTG, G8 mouthpiece for wind ensembles/symphonies/small groups, and a horrible old King with a Monette TS-6 (a little over compensation, but i plan on buying and Edwards lead bone soon) for jazz. I love playing with people better than I am, especially for legit stuff. Hope to talk to you all later!

I'm not new, but I haven't posted for about six or seven months, so I thought I say a quick hello.

Hi,  my name is Michael.  I've been picking through this site since I was in high school but only recently registered (I wanted in on the action).   I'm a classical player who cringes at the use of the word "legit".  I have nothing but respect for musicians who express themselves in the myriad of idoms that are not exclusive to european classical music.  I play solo Bb trombone with the Ozark Mountains British Brass Band and I'm the trombonist for the Elemental Brass Quintet(the Eb, pronounced E-flat).  Doesn't get much more european than that!  

    My parents are both classical musicians who don't really have much respect for wind instruments in general (I was a rebellious teenager ).  I believe that classical music is in trouble (at least in the U.S.) and is well on it's way to being a dead art form.   I also think it's laughable to hear/read comments that snub or seem to snub "commercial" players.   Anyone that would like to discuss this more with me can "pm" me or chat with me on aim.  my SN is Trombonefsky.   ...I love to debate...

     As far as equipment goes, I like to keep it simple.  I play a Conn 88h with a standard bach 5g that i've had since high school.   For jazz and some chamber playing I have a nice King 3b with f-attachment.  I use a Bach 5gs on the King.

Ive been on the forum for a few months but I thought I should introduce myself. I play trombone (obviously) with the Royal Australian Navy Band. Ive done 7 years so far. I play mostly jazz including lead with the big band, but I also play bass bone a lot. I also MD the big band. Im turning my attention to classical playing at the moment as our main symphonic player just left. Lots of great experiences in this role including a heck of a lot of travelling. Ironically not much on a ship.

I also play with a few bands in Melbourne including big bands and latin bands. I also do alot of horn section work with various bands. Very busy!!

It may appear that I am a Bach man, but im in the process of buying an old Conn 88H and a new Shires bass bone.

I am Don Johnson (no relation to Miami Vice) and I like trombone!

I am a tenor trombonist.  I have had 3 years so far (this is my 4th) of playing the trombone, and many things are going great!  I just finished concert band with songs like 'Rollo Takes a Walk' by David Maslanka, 'Snakes' by Thomas Duffy, 'Cluster Fluster Bluster March' by David Holsinger, and 'Air for Band' by Frank Erickson.  They are all great, but Rollo, I must say, gets a little monotonous after the first few hundred times of playing it.  My favorite by far is the Holsinger piece since it is much trombone oriented. ^_^

Now I am in pepband.  Fun!  Our songs are as follows:

Love pepband...  I also want to join our school's jazz band, but am unsure if I can now...  Signups ended at the beginning of the year.  I can probably persuade my band director, he is a nice guy, funny, and doesn't care much about mistakes except fixing them.  He also punishes us with Simon Says when we do bad things (literally).

I also love to learn the themes from video games on my trombone...  I also practice some keyboard.

My trombone has a Holton 12C mouthpiece (works for me!) and the trombone itself is a Getzen...

We only have three trombones in our band...  At least we are all decent and try our hardest.

I'm not totally new here. Got some good advice here about a trombone I wanted to buy, but had the money planned for other stuff. Bought it - thanks to you people from the forum. I love it (both, the new bone, and the forum).

My name's Kaspar Hensel. I call myself skarabaeus, because the ska did it to me!

Played the trumpet for about 14 Years, then tried the Trombone (say, 3 Years ago with interruptions) without ever really laying aside the Trumpet. Reason for the change: Funk.

Founded a ska band. A trumpet player was easier to find, so trombone's my position since then (2 Years ago). I do also arrange the brass-section in the Band.

Met Rico Rodriguez at a concert. Want to be a professional Musician - cannot decide between trumpet or trombone.

My name's Chris, I'm 16, I've played guitar for almost 6 years, since then I've picked up bass guitar, alto sax, french horn, marching percussion, and for the last 9 months I've been playing trombone and it is now my primary.  I play on a yamaha student horn owned by my school but will be getting my own (probably either a King or a Conn) pretty soon.  I popped out      for the first time ever today and I'm very proud of it.

Hello everyone. I've been on trombone e-mail list for some time (almost 10 years), and have finally taken the plunge to seriously join the OTJ Forum discussions.

I play tenor and bass trombone, having starting playing again about 9 years ago after a break of 17 years after I graduated from high school.

My "day" gig is engineer, but I also play in the Denver Concert Band (also its webmaster and past President) and play bass trombone in Swing Inc., a big band.
I've also recently gotten more serious about electric bass again.

I recognize many names on various posts, and look forward to meeting many other trombonists on the forum.

I'm a lurker in the past but just registered!

I'm Andy Cattanach, from Preston, Lancashire, in the UK.

I'm primarily a tuba player but also Bass Trom as well.

I sit behind a Yamaha 613H with Yeo Signature mouthpiece, and Besson 992 BBb Tuba with a Mike Finn MF3.

Play anything from Opera, 10 piece brass, Brass Bands, Big Bands, Shows, Orchestras on both instruments.

As an example, in the last month I have done a week on the show "Crazy for You" (Bass trom/Tuba), the RNCM Festival of Brass with the Fodens Band (Tuba), and a concert with Brahms Requiem/Puccini Messa de Gloria (Bass Trom). Variety is the spice of life!

I Tutor and conduct several Youth Brass Band's in the area, and teach a little when I've time. By day, I'm a Network Manager for a large Technology College as well as running the brass ensemble etc.

Howdy frum Texas, ya'll.  I am new to the forum here, but know many of the names I am seeing from good ole Trombone-L.  I am 58, in my 30th year as Professor of Trombone at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.  I tour regularly with Keith Brion and His New Sousa Band, lead a community based big band called the Night & Day Orchestra, and perform seasonally with the Symphony of Southeast Texas.

I am also proud of my 4-year association with the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. (1971-1975) where I was trombone section leader and one of 4 tour soloists on several national tours.

I reckon TOWN HALL might be as good a place as any to have folks to introduce themselves.  I just know I spent a good 30 minutes trying to find my way to my post to check if it made it through cyberspace.  It did.  Imagine that.

Forum type of trombone discussion is going to take some getting used to by this old trombone-L guy.  I'll figure it out.

Hi there, Wayne. The forum *is* easy to use, honest! When you're entering a post, the section you're entering it into is listed at the top of the reply box. Immediately after posting, a message will come up saying "Click here to view your message", or if you wait a couple of seconds, the system will take you to it automatically. To find it later, or to see if anyone has responded, all you have to do is scroll down to that same section and look for a "New post" indicator - an orange icon - to the left of the topic you posted in.

If you want to find all your posts, click on your profile icon - situated bottom left of each of your posts - then, in the profile, click "View all posts by TxTbone", and voila! Clicking on any of those posts will take you straight to the topic in which it was posted.

We've just been looking at a different type of forum, with a view to moving servers, and it was a *lot* less user-friendly than this one! Also, I personally find the forum format easier that the undifferentiated email-type of list - it means that, if I don't want to, I don't have to read *any* instrumentation topics....

With ref to where this topic should be placed - I'm not sure. It doesn't really belong in Comments and Suggestions, which should be used for what it says, or in Announcements, which is reserved for Admin use. I guess I put it into Chit-Chat because introducing oneself is largely a social activity, and the Practice Break is the place for members to socialise. I'll see what the other moderators think.

My name is Richard Carson.  I joined a few weeks ago and have found this to be a great information resource and a fun diversion.

I started playing trombone in 1976.  I played at Lindberg Elementary School, Skelly Junior High, and Hale High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  I also played in the All-City and All-State Jazz Bands during that time period.  I took lessons from the late Roger Fenn, a wonderful man.

I played in the jazz band at the University of Tulsa from 1984 to 1988, and studied trombone, composition, and improvisation with Vernon Howard.  In the TU band, I had the opportunity to play with guest artists Bill Watrous, Conti Condoli and Makoto Ozone.  I went to law school at the University of Oklahoma, and briefly played in Irv Wagner's trombone choir and broadway show band, before sucumbing to the demands of law school.

For the last fifteen years, I have played only sporadically.  Highlights include my participation in the Phantom Horns, a horn section that has played in various configurations.  Fun gigs include playing and recording with local rock band Sybil's Machine including a gig at Cain's Ballroom (of Bob Wills and Sex Pistols fame) and opening for the country rock group Molly Hatchet.  Another weird gig was serving as a temporary replacement player with a Salvation Army Band, playing the bass bone part on my Superbone.  I also have played in church orchestras.  I'm not good enough to make a living playing trombone, so I don't ever try to compete for paying gigs.  However, I really love trombone, and jump at the chance to play with a group.

My main horn is a King 2B.  I also play a Superbone, as discussed above.  Recently, I was excited to learn that the horn I played through elementary and junior high before relegating it to marching band duties in high school is a Conn 10H with a Coprion bell, manufactured in 1956.  It is now in the shop for a minor tune-up, thanks in part to advice from you good folks in the forum.  I look forward to returning it to frontline service.  I also have a Jupiter soprano trombone, which I can't do much with.

Some great trombonists whom I have had the pleasure of hearing in concert include:  Bill Watrous, Steve Wiest, Maynard Ferguson (several Superbone solos), Urbie Green, Steve Turre, Al Grey, Curtis Fuller, Delfeayo Marsalis, The Capital Bones, Buddy Morrow, Alex Iles, James Pankow, and Tom Garling.  The top on my list of living trombonist who I haven't yet heard in concert is Slide Hampton.

To whoever is responsible for starting this forum and keeping it going, and all of you posters who make it valuable and enjoyable, Thank You!

well.... I live in Sri Lanka. thats just south of India you know the country which had the first woman prime minster. any way.... I've been playing for around 4 years now. but sadly Brass musicians are rare in Sri Lanka   well there aren't alot of pro's around 4 or 6   the rest are all papara band (watch a game of cricket)
there wouldn't happen to be any trombonists form Sri Lanka here would there?

Well, I guess I need to give an introduction since I've been reading on here for a long time but just recently became a member


Name: Robert, (Bob to most people)

Life story: I'll try to be brief, I've played trombone for the better part of 17 years, born and raised in Ft Lauderdale, FL and studied with Tim Conner all throughout high school. I Was a member of Florida All State band in 1994 and won auditions to USMC bands and Army bands as a senior in high school, I didn't graduate on time and lost both of those opportunities. I spiraled downward and ended up as a drug addict and alchoholic. I became a christian in 1998 and drums became my primary instrument playing in church. Played trombone off and on for specials and things but not too seriously. I recieved my licence as a minister in 2000 and in 2001 I moved to Glasgow, Ky witch is where my wife was from. I now am a computer programer for a company here in Ky. and am a Youth Pastor for a small church. I recently began playing trombone seriously in fall of 2005 and am currently studying with Lee Blakeman who is the professor at Western Kentcky University.  Although I don't attend college he is gracious enough to let me play with the trombone choir and I'll also be performing the 2nd movement of the Grondahl Concerto and the t-bone studio concert at the end of this month.  Although I made alot of mistakes I wouldn't trade my life experiences for anything, I have a beautiful wife, a beautiful 4 year old daughter and a great relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. My goal is to be doing ministry full time and freelancing on the horn part time. I currently play and old 1975ish Bach 42 Strad(as the name implies) straight tenor and and hoping to move to a 42BO eventually. I woundn't trade the sound of that old 42 for anything I just would like to have a trigger to make some more notes availible. So much for brief, hope to be getting to know all of you soon, I'm outta here!

So I'm a Sophomore in High School. Besides playing Trombone im an avid historian. Music is the most important thing to me and schools I want to go to are Berklee, Indiana U, Juliard, the Naval Academy, or West Point. I want to do something in music. I'm currently in AP Music Theory. Not to toot my own horn but I believe I'm a pretty good Trombonist and a decent composer. Cheers.

I'm currently a band director in Gainesville, FL. I'm a graduate of Auburn University in Auburn, AL and still continue to play pretty regularly. My primary "instrument" is bass, but I'm starting to get much more into tenor for jazz and combo. I do a lot of arranging and some composition for all forms of ensemble. Of late I've been doing big band, but I've done some very respectable concert band, trombone, marching band, and chamber arrangements and works. If anyone here is looking for that I'm always willing to get with you and talk about it.

Otherwise I'm just here to talk about all things music/trombone.

I'm new here but thought the introduction thread was nice.  I played trombone from fourth grade through high school, was first chair at almost all the honor bands I played in, and when I graduated decided to dance (ballet) for a few years, figuring that I could always come back to music.  A few months later I decided to try playing trumpet and did that until two months ago, which ended up being eight years.  That pretty well destroyed any hopes of a career in music I guess, but I am still enjoying ballet so that is not a problem.  The trombone has come back incredibly quickly, and I think I am better now than I was (with the valve sound in my head the slide precision is 10x better).  I will probably look into taking lessons sometime soon, as I remember how helpful Buddy Baker was when I studied with him.  Plus it just helps to play for somebody I think.

Anyway, I look forward to getting back into touch with fellow musicians.

I've been watching the forums for a year or so. I finally decided I would join, that way if I come up with any questions I can post.

I'm a student at Northern Arizona University, studying until the end of this school year with Peter Vivona. He's retiring next month. I'm currently working on my B.A. in Music Ed. I plan on earnign an associates in music technology, and eventually I plan on earning my master's. What I get my master's is undecided at the moment.

Hello everyone! I'm new here, so I thought I post a bit about myself.

My name is Christopher. I live in Orlando, Florida, USA. I'll be a sophmore in highschool this year, and I'm looking forward to another great year in highschool.

I play a 20-30 year old bach (seriel # is in the 50,000's) Its a used student horn, and I've had it for 4 years. I'm looking to upgrade to a bach 36B or maybe a 42B. I use the standard 6 1/2 MP that came with my trombone.

I also play the piano pretty well, and alittle guitar (when I say alittle, I mean.... well, alittle).


Thats pretty much me there, I'm looking forward to being here, the people I've already talked to are awesome.

Hello, hello!

I am a high school student in Central Iowa, and I joined right after I got home from a Jazz Camp.  One of the moderators here was working with me in a sectional.

As for the horn I play, it is a Large Bore Yamaha Xeno (thus my user name (phile means love in Latin, in case you don't know) here); model number YSL-882GO (Gold Brass Bell, Open wrap) with a 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece for jazz and a Peter Sullivan for Concert.

I'm an aspiring Jazz trombonist and composer, currently working on a piece that I'm going to submit to the Jim Widner Big Band to see if they might perform or even look at it.
