The criteria for the size of my TV was that I had to be able to lift and move it around by myself. I couldn't do that with a similar sized CRT TV.

Actually I love watching old mystery movies. I have a lot of Charlie Chan.

Quote from: Richard Tadaki on Nov 08, 2012, 03:19PMHi Everybody,
I promised to post some pictures of my Williams trombones so here's the first. More to come later.
This is a family portrait of my Williams trombones. From left to right: Duda/Sandhagen 9, Duda 8 1/2" 8 bell, Burbank Williams 8, Burbank Williams 6 (my original horn bought in 1971), Frankenbone Williams 6 assembled by John Sandhagen (Donelson bell, Duda parts, King 2B+ slide tubes), Burbank William 4. I play all of these horns, going from one to the other as my moods strikes me, but my favorite two are the Duda 8 1/2" 8 bell with Duda 8 slide, and the Frankenbone 6. Both are very easy to play with great response and great tonal range.
Aloha,
Richard
Beautiful Richard. Doesn't look like you need to buy any horns for the foreseeable future. BTW, what did you do with your Williams 4?

Hi Chris,
I still have the 4. I'm trying to fit it into my playing and may use it instead of my 6 when playing with the community band. I would love to use the 4 in a jazz band but I guess it really shouldn't matter. There are no jazz bands for me to play in at the moment.
I use the 8 for orchestra.
Aloha,
Richard

Looks like Richard and Chris snatched up all the Williams horns in the state of Hawaii. No wonder I couldn't find any when I was going up there.
Happy thanksgiving to all.

I hadn't seen that one yet John. Thanks for the link. These Selmer bells with Williams slides are among the things that I wish we could go back and ask Earl about.
What would your guess on date for this eBay slide be? Early stick and ball water key and slide bow, no bell nut or slide lock, but later style single beauty bands at the bottom of the cork barrels?
It must surely be pre or during WWII? The patent date for the later water key was 1945, granted 1948, right? Don't you think this is likely a WWII issue horn?

I have a dumb question. What's the deal with Earl Williams horns?
I've never played one, but they seem to be a near fetish object among people who have. I've played Bach, Conn, King, Olds, Blessing, and Getzen horns, but never any of the fancy ones like Rath, Edwards, Shires, etc. Most of the horns I've played were vintage (although some of them weren't vintage when I played them).
So my question is, how do the Earl Williams horns fit into the pantheon of vintage pro horns, modern Conns, Bachs and Yamahas, and modern custom horns? I can't afford to buy one and try it.

Williams horns would be analogous to Shires, Rath, or Greenhoe today - with the added cachet that you can't necessarily just run out and buy one, you've gotta find one first.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Earl-Williams-6-Trombone-/221175982463?pt=Brass_Instruments&hash=item337f1da97fAlso looks very similar in style to the Strickler trombones I've seen. I figure the two Earls used the same engraver.
Interesting that it's got a 7.5" bell; most Williams 6's have 8" bells.

I think it may have been an LA thing because the LA 6 I had, which just so happens to be the other 6 that's currently listed, also had a 7.5" bell.

yeah this bell is really different --more bass -- fatter more spready--lighter articulations -
wider spectrum --looks very very close to burbank
trying with heavier la slide and lighter burbank
------
the 1606 proto and burbank are much immediate hitting out of center
P3 is filling the room and still very full at ppp
---------
so maybe more of a ballad than hard hitting lead bell
---------
aaron building slide using shires 500 with the oem cork barrels -slide bow ferrules slide lock from duda
-------
outer on burbank much lighter weight than la
--------
the bell liked the heavier la slide
so maybe nickle upper and brass lower outers
------
to replicate burbank --2b+ would work
---------
the heavier la outers --shires lt brass
---------
placement of the slide grip is higher on the la
and slight differences in grip feel also
---------
jiggs or 100h or fabricated slide crossbbar
and saturn water key finish out details
----------

Hi, John. Yes I bought it. I spent the last day and a half with DJ trying both of his model 6 slides with P-3. My preference was for the more weighty LA slide so I'm gonna have Aaron Chandler use Shires lightweight tubes. As you probably know, Shires lightweight tubes aren't all that lightweight, probably real close to the LA slide weight.
I'm also taking a cue from my Inderbinen Piccola and will have the upper outer tube nickel and the lower outer tube brass. I also have the following Williams parts; upper and lower cork barrels, slide lock mechanism, male receiver, slide bow/crook with ferrules. This will make Aaron's job much easier. Aaron will make the curvy handbrace, the handslide brace, and bumper for the crook. Aaron will pattern the slide after the LA slide which had the braces set further back, closer to the mouthpiece, than the Burbank slide. I preferred that because it is nearly identical to my Kanstul 1606 prototype which is my every day horn.
The blow of this bell was much different than either of DJ's Williams. It has a huge velvety sound with a lot of overtones present. A veiled attack, and a gorgeous pianissimo. Though when I stepped on the gas she would really fire up. I chose to use a nickel upper slide tube to assist (hopefully) in more audible articulations.
This is an exciting project and I believe it will turn out beautifully. I've played several of Aaron's slides and they are magnificent.

thanks for the email about this bell i knew immediately who it was for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of those things !!!!!!!!scott had been liking the burbank -well his 1606 is very close
the velvet is so far away --
so the p3 is supposedly a version of an existing horn ???????????????
wish i knew more about how these were made --banged out --etc
---------
the first note he blew was giant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! incredible
filled the room

With William Cork Barrels, which lead pipe are you going with?
Kanstual Cork Barrels (or Shires) would offer removable screw pipes... or are you going to "press fit" pipes? or soldered in?
Just curious...
Sounds like a cool project!

Duda didn't have any braces made up. No biggie. Aaron's curved braces are superb and he's gonna use a Jiggs handslide brace which is what I prefer. He'll make the bumper out of sheet nickel and the post for the rubber tip will be made of stainless steel. I'm also going with a saturn water key.
I prefer press fit leadpipes over threaded so that's what this will be. My Kanstul 1606 proto is press fit. I've been using a Kanstul H6 pipe for quite some time now. That could change with this Williams, but I doubt it.
