actually dan, a dent that high up on the throat would have a small but obvious effect on how the horn slots. at least it has been my experience that that is usually the case.
I'm not saying it ain't still worth a ton of money, but it ain't gonna fetch premium dollar with that kind of damage.

If I got that horn it would be pampered to like new condition at no expense spared. A thousand dollars worth of work would be fine with me. I wouldn't bat an eyelash. After all. how many Burbank 6's come up? How long will it be till the next one? If you put Two dollars in a jar every day till one does you most likely would have enough to buy it when it does. Put three in that jar and you would have enough to fix it.

I'm planning to go up to Kansas City, MO this summer but I imagine the 9 will be gone by then. Too bad. I wouldn't mind having a 9 with a 9 1/2" bell but the price is out of my reach.

I'm the owner of the horn in question. I really didn't have intention of selling at such a ridiculous price. It was mainly to open up the door to possible trades for equally unique items. (But I still had parents of high school kids wanting pics and inquiring! 
) Luckily, I steered a few of them toward used Bachs and Conns for their kids.
This horn is incredible. I acquired it after a repair friend scooped up a herd of trombones from an estate sale (or something to that effect). The widow of the gentleman that owned it was quite a player in his younger years and had performed with service bands until getting out to pursue a non-musical career afterward. This, along with an excellent German bass trombone, were the gems of the lot. He did have some other interesting jazz horns but I had no money left after buying this horn. We think he might have bought the horn directly from Earl while in the service. I found out that the original owner and I grew up in the same area of Ohio and led very similar lives, just 50 years apart!
It does indeed have a 9 1/2" bell! Repair friend thinks it is an old 62 bell, but the rest of the horn is totally from Earl. The large bass-size bell combined with the medium bore sounds like an approximation of a large bore tenor. It seems like it would be a good option for a person that plays small tenor all day, but has to pick up a large tenor now and then (or for studio work). In the case was a Schilke 53 that appeared to have a custom shank for the horn. Interesting combination but didn't work for me, since I play bass mostly and use the same Doug Elliot 108 mouthpiece on all my horns (with different shanks).
There's no serial number on the horn anywhere, just the stamp on top of the bell flair. The slide is perfect, even with the tight gap between the tubes. The grip is very comfortable and I'm sorry that more horns don't have it that way from the factory. My only gripe is my small hands have difficulty with the F valve lever. It's set up like an old King horn with the valve operated behind the bell brace. I don't want to do any work to change it or restore it since it's a me issue and not the horn. There's a bit of a patina as well- I understand that the gentleman liked to keep his horns on stands near a window in his house.

Those were mostly 9.5 inch and I know of one model 10 with a 10 inch bell. If the horn had a serial number it would be on the female portion of the receiver. The model number the just above that is the serial number. But most model 9's have a 9 inch bell. I only know of 3 that were 9.5 besides yours. But these horns come out of the woodwork, you just never know when another will show up and what configuration it will be. There is a general order of what each model is but there are always exceptions, like your horn.
Earl developed the model 8 and 9 horns for the LA studio guys. You have the front of the horn fairly small, the the large back end of the horn. The bell flair is very dramatic in my opinion. This was done so when a guys plays a small bore horn all day and has to change to a larger bore it is not such a big blow. Yet you get the sound of a bigger bore without all of the effort of a .547 type horn. Dick Nash, Slyde Hyde, Tommy Pederson, and a few other guys used them for some time. The bore size is actually a .520 mandrel, but comes out slightly larger. Most measure at .522. HIs development of the 8 and 9 go way back to the Wallace Williams days in the late 1920's to the late 1930's. I have a Wallace that is a .522 bore with a 7.5 inch bell. Man it plays great. Of course all of his horns do.

Matt's dad Norm taught at CSUN for many years and Matt's a great trombonist...who fixes Grandfather clocks. One day he got a call to fix a clock and when he got there it was all kinds of messed up...stuff bent, things soldered and generally wrong. Matt pointed these things out and the lady laughed and said,"It never worked after my dad worked on it...he was a whiz with trombones but horrible at clocks". Matt asked her who her dad was and then he found out it was Earl. She gave him a bunch of photos from the shop.

So I finally got around to taking some photos of my most recent acquisition: a circa 1960 Williams 6! Found on Denver Craigslist, two days before the seller was going to put it on EBay. Serial #916. One-owner horn, originally played by Harold Branch (after he left the Stan Kenton band). Harold's granddaughter had kept the horn in a closet since the '70's. A great playing horn with original case and all original accessories.

I need to get some prices on what my trombones are worth for insurance purposes. First one is a Williams 6 from 1947. It is silver plated with a lightweight Minick slide made from the pieces of the Williams when the slide wore out. Second is a 1964 Burbank 7 with the pigtail which is all original. Third is a Williams 8 serial 1116 all original. The 6 and 7 are Art Pearlman's old horns. I sure miss him. Thanks for your help.
