actually, we just recorded this and 13 other arrangements for the band. there was no dancing in the studio....that i know of.

Okay.. I filmed this during last night's performance of the Joe Gransden Big Band here in Atlanta. This is a trumpet battle between three of the most outstanding trumpet players in the South on the standard "Just Friends".

Why is this under "YouTube Trombonists", you ask? Because I don't follow instructions very well.

I did not say anything derogatory about 'bebop' or 'fast'. It is quite possible to play unbelievably fast, and still construct wonderfully creative solos. Otherwise Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie would not have been considered the absolute geniuses they obviously were. Call me old fashioned, but I still like to hear some melodic lines even in a cutting contest.

You're right! But you did make that smug and condescending remark about 4 (including the "bored" sax player) of the finest musicians with whom I've worked...who you don't know...and that's why it wasn't cool.

Had you left the word "yawn" off the end I wouldn't have my thongs in such a bind. (I don't really wear thongs....often).

"Bebop" ain't my friend but those bad mofos with the trumpets are.

passion is a good thing to possess...but passionately defending one's opinion is a recipe for dissonance. the oldest moral in the book is..."if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all." but, some folks need to teach the world how wrong it is and how right they are. instead of just sharing their views and experiences, they chastise, lecture and ridicule while not realizing that even if they might have something useful to bring to the discussion, they have discredited themselves in the eyes of their audience. this forum is full of that and it's the biggest waste of time and source of emotional dissonance. go scream at someone out your window....we're all friends here. friends respect each other. they disagree, but respect each other.

i'll say once again that we are all the smallest little group of folks that care about things for which the world has little time. why deride one another and segment this tiny group into tinier groups when we could share our views and support one another? and you have to turn on your computer and log into the site to criticize people? screaming out the window is a lot more efficient. i'm sure there is someone out there right now wearing a loud shirt or whistling out of tune. go get 'em!

David, some previous posts on the forum along these lines (both you and dj come to mind) really got me thinking about how I talk about other musicians. With some reflection I came to recognize my portion of our shared obligation to collectively support the arts. Meaning all of them. Even the stuff that's not my thing. Even the folks that aren't the highest, fastest, most melodic, most dynamic, most creative performers in my humble opinion. So, um... thanks.

And you know what? Thanks again. Because by releasing myself of this negativity, I think I took a big step forward as a performer. Suddenly it didn't matter if that guy on the other side of the bar hated me. I was just doing my own damn thing as best as I could do it and the good guys will realize this. The rest? Well...
