Richard, you're right - probably is gonna be a good player (I hope).
I've got some plans... gonna cost a little money too, but can't wait to get the plan rolling.
It's a restoration candidate for sure.

If you come to the GA Festival in a couple years, I hope to be there (and I'll have mine in tow). You're welcome to test drive 'em.

Hi tbone62,
Better yet, if you ever get to Maui, come over and check out my family of Williamses. I'm getting some work done on one of my slides right now but after I get that back I'm planning to take a family picture.

Richard,
Wow, that would be great! I've never been to Hawaii but it's on my list of places I want to visit. Maybe one of these days we'll get there. If we do, I'll be sure to say hi!

Well, I promised someone that I'd post some pictures of my Burbank 8 so there they are. I'm sure loving playing this horn.

Totally OT, but that's a sweet looking conrad-johnson amp, and is that a Thorens deck for playing those antique vinyl audio delivery systems? I used to have a similar rig, back in the day when I was a single guy, defending my country with my trombone. It was just a few decades ago...

Good eye, stanzabone. You can see the conrad-johnson preamp but what you don't see is the custom made tube amp off to the left (6CA7 power tubes wired for triode mode and running in a Class A circuit). It'll probably be in the Williams family portrait when I get one of my slides back from John Sandhagen (it has lots of issues). The turntable is a Thorens TD160 Mk II and it has a Sumiko MMT arm with a high output moving coil cartridge. I wouldn't know where to turn if I ever need to replace the cartridge.
But I digress. I should try to blow some Shires, Edwards, and Rath horns so I know how my Williamses compare, but I certainly love playing my horns so maybe trying the others isn't such an issue.
Aloha,
Richard

Is the Selmer Signet so terrible that every example needs to have its bell thrown away? I had this discussion with Troy back when he got his, but... it's an interesting curiosity of brass manufacturing in the US as well as military band equipment.
I hope this particular Signet will go to someone that intends to enjoy the horn as a horn and not as a slide with an extra bell to be thrown in the dumpster.

I kept mine orriginal. You don't need to throw out the bell to swap slides.

Ok, fair enough. For some reason, I feel like Troy had to swap out the slide connector on his to get it to fit his "pre-4".

That was me. I tried it ou cuz I was curious how it would sound on my 8. Spent 100 bucks to have a new tenon made at OBEELOGH. Switched it back.

I got my Bob 6 back from Mike Corrigan this past weekend and had a chance to play it at a rehearsal tonight. The boys at BACHorndoctor did a very nice job restoring it. Maybe it's the clean car runs better thing but it played beautifully, better than I remember. Suddenly I was thinking why do I need my Shires? Thanks to Mike and the gang.

Looks like a Burbank 6
I have questions about this particular horn. It looks like there may be two small patches or red rot just inside the hand slide ring just proximal to the hand slide crook (not the larger pink patch farther up).
Since these horns go for thousands of dollars now, the bidders should probably insist on a thorough inspection by a good brass horn technician before jumping into this auction.
The seller does give a 3 day inspection, but for this kinda money, I'd want an inspection before I bid.

I dont think that small of an area would be a huge concern on a 50 plus year old horn. If it was a newer horn that could be an issue. Looks minor to me.....

I would say the dent in the bell throat is more of a concern. That one's a doozy.

That will come out pretty easy I think. That small of an area of red rot should not be an issue either. I have a couple of horns with bigger areas than that. And they play just fine. Old age will get me before the rot gets the horn! Looks like a decent horn, I hope it finds a ood home. Looks like the feeding frenzy has begun.

The bell throat dent is what i was concerned with as well... and the seller has represented it well enough in the pics that I'd have a good idea of what I'm getting.
I had to bow out early... no paychecks from the school since december. come Feb 28th, i'm cleaning ebay out

That dent is NOTHING!!! You should see what Oberloh does with a tuba that has fallen of a stage od one that was run over with a car. Really That dent is minor. Sure its far up on the throat but that really wouldn't matter to a tech that knew what he was doing. And I have no idea how anyone can determine that that spot is actually red rot without looking at it in person. I would swear that some here are just trying to make others not want to bid on the horn to keep the price down. I can take a piece of green on brass and make it look red in about three seconds. And it aint red rot!! Period! Sorry but I just hear a bunch of malarchy.

I agree Dan. "I have no idea how anyone can determine that that spot is actually red rot without looking at it in person." But those small pink circular patches I mentioned look like red rot without the small red spot in the Middle.
I have no interest in keeping the price down on any Earl Williams trombones as they are way, way outta my league!...I would, however, be interested in keeping th price down on any Bach LT16s that are for sale.

Look. That dent wouldn't even affect the way it plays. In regards to how serious it is, and how much it may cost to repair. Its nothing, compared to the value of the horn. The only deal breaker on a Williams horn for me would be if the tubes are shot. Unless you can find OEM tubes, the horn is fine. That dent would cost maybe 200 bucks to fix, if that. The dent machine and a decent tech and it would be good as new. Now if the engraving was smashed in that might bug me, but that can even be fixed. I'd bet dollars to donuts you could take it to Oberloh in Seattle on a Saturday and sit there and watch Dan fix that dent in just a couple hours,if that. People put way to much freak out factor on a dent in a bell. Now it is a little high up, but it CAN BE FIXED!!! Heck, if the tuning slide was smashed half flat I would care less. I've seen dented cork barrels resurrected. That horn will sell for over 3 thousand dollars, and rightfully so. If it was me I would drop 3 grand on it in a heartbeat and spend another 1000 on it and not even bat an eye. How much does the best custom Shires cost?? This horn is worth at the very least that much. If I hadn't just dropped 5000 bucks into my motor rebuild I would own that model 6. Bet on it.!!

Regarding slide tubes, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to replace them. John Sandhagen used King 2B Plus tubes to make me a slide for my Frankenbone 6.

No disrespect Richard, But it's my feeling that even though King / H.N White made great tubes, they ain't Earls , but to your defense, How does anyone know that the Williams tubes on their second hand purchase, or even 4th hand purchase will come with actual Earl Williams slide tubes? So much has been proffered as to what actually makes Earls horns so great. My feeling is that its a combination of the tubes and the bells. How he drew his tubes was exceptional. I think King tubes are probably the next best thing that I have ever come across, but I never tried many other makers stuff.

A personal interest? YES!!!! I want to buy it and I can't afford it so I want whoever buys it to pay a lot. LOL!!!!!
Not really. No, I don't have an interest in the horn. I do see a real misunderstanding about buying horns here though and I just want to share what I know. And I think people here are trying to scare others from buying it. I also want to educate others about just what is a deal breaker on a horn. I am one of the lucky ones. I got to, get to, learn from a great horn tech, Dan Oberloh in Seattle Washington. What so many think can't be fixed can, and in the case of a WILLIAMS trombone. ITS WORTH IT TO FIX IT!!! I would!!!! You need to look at the percentage of the cost to fix v.s. the value of the horn. Thats something D.J understands very well. I've seen the effed up bells and slides Dan Fixed for him. They are like new again. What more could you want!!!! Oh and before long old Danny Boy will be drawing his own tubes, I've seen the draw bench.
