For being such an advocate of Bb/G tenors, why on earth would you want a 2 valve medium bore tenor, not to mention neither valve being in G? That setup sounds like a bass bone that shrank in the dryer!

edit: no disrespect meant for Mr. Ferris, BTW. It works for him obviously, but impractical for most.

I like what he does with it on Xactimo!
However trying Gb Db combo wouldn't be too risky since Gb could easily be cut to G or just buy a second tuning slide.
And this third horn will never actually materialize for me anyway. Just a whim because I like the sound and facility I hear. Especially the unison licks with the sax.

If you could have only 3 horns...
I think the restriction of 3 instruments is unfair for a person who doubles on tenor and bass because that has evolved into two different universes. If I had to cover both requirements with 3 horns, I'd be inclined to be pretty conservative:
- King 3B, which can work for big band and small combos.
- a 525/547 horn with F attachment -- the most versatile trombone. This can work in chamber groups, concert band and symphony. Getzen 725, for example.
- A bass trombone that is biased to the playing I'd expect to do. If I played more big band, I'd get a lighter one, such as a Conn or Kanstul 1662i. If I were doing mainly symphony work, I'd go with a heavy instrument, such as an Edwards with Thayer valves and the very heavy brass bell. If I wasn't sure, then probably a Bach 50.
======
If tenor and bass playing could be considered separately, then for tenor, I'd go with that Getzen 725, a 3B, and a classic Conn valve trombone. A symphonic guy should substitute a good alto for that valve trombone.
For bass, I'd go with a symphonic (i.e. heavy) bass, a jazzier (lighter) bass and a tuba of some sort.

If you could have only 3 horns...
1) Jazz horn- .500-.508-ish, straight
2) Custom Large Bore tenor, F valve
3) Alto
If I had to pick a 4th it would be an inline valves Bass trombone or a compensating euphonium, probably the Bass. For a lot of the things i would like to do, bass is more practical...but since ive gotten more into classical such an alto sounds more appealing.

If you could have only 3 horns...
Shires Large Bore Tenor with a Gold Brass bell
Shires small bore tenor
King 2B
I'd love to have a williams, but never having actually owned one or played one for long enough to tell if it suits me in an ensemble, it doesn't yet make the list.
Now if I could only have one horn? Shires Small Bore dual bore (500/508 or 500/525) customized to have a removable rotor. The everything horn for the guy that does mostly jazz latin and small group stuff with the occasional pit gig thrown in for torment.

Hmmm, I just looked at my response from 3 years ago, different from what I would choose today. Back then I was less serious about bass and didn't play alto at all.
1) Greenhoe Custom Large Bore Tenor

Conn 62H
Honorary mention Shires .500
Say what?
Oh yeah, i already have them............
Wow looking at my old entry things have certainly changed........
My 3 main horns now are......
Shires 7GLW 7.75/T08 with seamed Yellow brass tuning slide. (Jazz Horn)
Shires 7YM/TW47 seamed rose brass tuning slide/Tru-Bore Valve.
Conn 62H Bass Trombone.
I play these 3 everyday!!!
Wouldn't mind exchanging the 62H for a Shires to complete the set though.
So if I could have only 3 horns, they would be IT as they are what I need to make my living.
I do have some nice collectors items that are my spares though
An original Larry Minick 100H.
A gold plated 1967 Bach 12 with customised slide.
A 1957 Bach Mt.Vernon NY6 VII.

If you could have only 3 horns...
I need four.
(Sorry...)
Shires .500 (regular weight bell [7.75", soldered bead, yellow brass] and slide, open leadpipe) for power lead work and playing over solos a loud big band.
Shires .508 (regular weight bell [8" gold brass, unsoldered bead] and slide, open leadpipe) for blending with damned near anybody .525 or smaller. Fine solo and lead horn, too.
Shires .525 w/ a Trubore valve (8" VE bell [Red brass, but a little lighter than most], regular weight slide, open leadpipe) for blending with damned near anybody .508 or larger. Also a great solo horn. Put the right m'pce in it and you are good to go in all but the most demanding orchestral settings as well.
Shire .565 bass w/ inline Trubores. Regular weight soldered yellow brass bell, regular weight slide, not quite ( ) the most open available backbore.
OK.
I'm ready.
Where's the gig and what's the music like?
S.

If you could have only 3 horns...
I have four, usually only use two.
Stealing Sam's format:
1975 Bach LT16MG .509 (heavier weight bell [7.5", soldered bead, gold brass] and lightweight silver-plated nickel slide, standard leadpipe) good for most tenor work. Bach 4C mouthpiece. Relegated to backup for:
1975 Bach Chocolate 36 .525 (heavier weight bell [8" yellow brass, soldered bead] and standard brass slide, standard leadpipe) for blending with nearly anybody, period. Preferred solo and lead horn. Bach 4C mouthpiece.
1983 Bach Chocolate 36B .525 (heavier weight bell [8" yellow brass, soldered bead] and standard brass slide, standard leadpipe) for blending with nearly anybody, period. Universal Trombone. Great solo and lead horn, can double as a bass. Bach 4C mouthpiece.
1970 Conn 60H .562 (9.5" bell [standard weight rose brass], regular weight slide, standard leadpipe) for blending with nearly anybody .525 or larger. Blends well with .500 Conn 6H. One smooth bass, also a great orchestral tenor. Conn 3B (Bass) mouthpiece.
With the 36 and the 60H, I am good to go with most anyone and any style.
If I am limited to one horn, the 36B is the one in my hands.
I'm with Sam.

.500 1965 Connstellation
.508 2009 Yamaha 891Z

I would upgrade my bass as well. The others are set.

Over the years, I've had 2 or 3 offers for mine. I think quality was an issue on the build. Mine has had its defects repaired, and they weren't bad.
I'd have to pay a lot more for another .547. I'm not using it much right now, but I sub for a band where it makes sense on 2nd, or in an orchestra.

Get my 6H all ACME'd up (replaced crook, Kanstul H6 leadpipe, maybe get that gooseneck worked on, slide work) and I'll keep it forever.
I've played very few large tenors... but I'll take a Shires somewhat like my 42.
Not much thinking here- Greenhoe dependent bass. Not sure about the configuration past that, but you get the idea.

I have one of the 3 I would like to own if I could only have 3
Large bore tenor = Bach 42G with a Thayer valve I installed, straight neckpipe, removable pipes currently playing a Shires 2LG
Bass Trombone = A Greenhoe valved 60H or 62H, preferrably dependant. Hard call, I like 50Bs as well, nothing like and elky Conn! Maybe CR valves instead, have to play on the CR's more to assess which ones I like better.
Alto = Conn 35H TIS alto. I would sell my customized Weril in a heart beat to get one of those Conn altos.

If you could have only 3 horns...
Extreme Yamaha fan here.
Besides the great YSL-682B I have, and the YEP-321, I'd want...
A YSL-872 Alto Trombone w/trill trigger
YSL-882O F large tenor
And a YEP-842S Custom euphonium
Georgous horns.
Wouldn't mind a Greenhoe bass though.. just saying. =]

This is easy.
Earl Williams 4
Earl Williams 6 (which I already have)
Earl Williams 8 or 9 (probably both)

If you could have only 3 horns...
I'm revising my list...deal.
1. Bach 42G*, Thayer Valve, Standard slide. I really love that Bach sound lately
2. Conn 62HI, Really want a Conn, can't justify that 88H yet
3. TIE! Conn 88H Elkhart/Mt. Vernon Bach 42B/New Yammy Xeno
Never tried a Xeno, wonder if they are as good as their Xeno trumpets.
Kind of a trumpet dabbler(when your brother is a trumpet player, it happens)

If you could have only 3 horns...
If I hade to limit my horns to 3, I think I hade to stop doubling some.
No tuba. No alto. No largebore tenor. No sackbut.
Just two basses and one medium tenor.
Bass #1 Kanstul 1662 bass #2 Bach 45
Tenor K&H Bart van Lier model.
If I run into something better I will change my mind.

I would have the two horns I already use. Conn 72h and Holton 180. Then I should wish I had a tenor. Maybe an old Conn.

If you could have only 3 horns...
Hm...
I would need a large tenor of some sort. Greenhoe-Conn 88HT, with the custom nickel slide crook (wow these really make a big difference)
And I would need a smaller tenor. I don't really know what. I play on King 3B now, but i would rather have a good 6H, I think. Or maybe a .508 Yamaha?(I know the 6H is .500.
Or maybe a lighter medium bore? In that case my Kanstul 1588A. A little hard to play lead on, but the right mouthpiece could fix that problem
The third horn... Hard question... Euphonium? No. Tuba? Don't play that... It's either bass or alto. I earn some money of playing bass, but I haven't taken the time to learn much alto, yet, even though I'm going on tour in the fall on alto. If alto, my dream horn is the Shires alto, if bass - I want some Yamaha (so I don't have to practice haha). I like the Yeo-horn, but the 620G I play now is a little easier to play "commercial" / "rhytmical" music on, I think. And I will never be a symphonic bass trombone player...
SO:
Greenhoe 88HT
Conn 6H
A good Yamaha bass

My Glassl alto. Definitely. Love that horn!
A Shires .547" tenor. Probably my current setup... maybe tweak a few things.
The third horn would be an old 88H, Elkhart vintage... that or an Alexander Bass trumpet.

My Shires 0.547 tenor (rotary valve, yellow brass slide, 1R bell) for orchestral playing. Hard to replace after the things we've done together.
My Shires small bore tenor 0.500-0.508, lightweight slide, yellow brass bell. Could probably experiment here but I won't outplay this horn in my lifetime.
An alto. I like my Bach a lot but could get interested in a Shires or something wonderful from Europe. Would like something with more stable intonation as long as it keeps me feeling as close to the trumpets and horns as this horn does.
And then I'd cry over my Bach 36 custom convertible, my bass trumpet, my solo alto horn, the Conn 50H I grew up on and a variety of horns I'd like to have (a valve trombone, a trombonium, a euphonium, a serpent, a sackbut). But the three above are the ones I perform on in the situations that matter to me the most.

3 basses for me ; (is that allowed ?)
1. My own Conn 70H `34 : snappy as a `500, dark as a Norwegian winter, loud as a weapon of mass destruction, soft as a blow in the ear etc.etc.
2. A double valve version of the above would have been nice !
3. A good 88H Elkhart with a good working slide !
Can I add : always good acoustically rooms to play in ?

My Holton 169 Bass - of all the basses I've owned and tried, both modern and vintage, this is THE ONE!
My Elkhart 88H - for doubling on tenor or as a small bass.
My Glassl alto - love the sound!
