I had the good fortune of being able to purchase both a Williams 6 and a Williams Wallace model 1 in the same week, a while back. Our resident forum Williams guru has been very helpful in answering my questions and offering sage advice. I mentioned that I had purchased them more as collectibles and John said "Why have them if you're not going to play them?" The more I think about it...he's right. I'm definitely keeping (and playing) the 6, but I'd be willing to let the Williams Wallace model 1 go for the right price to someone who really, really wants it. I'll try and get pics together and put it up in the classified area tomorrow. It has fantastic engraving all around the bell and up the entire length of the bell section. It's a beauty. I was told that it was probably special ordered that way...no way for me to know. It will need new inner slides, but I'll tell all in tomorrow's classified post. I bought it from forum member Drew, so maybe he can chime in after I post it with any knowledge he may also have.

Deej, it's not that they suck, the original slide is very playable. I'm just picky picky picky! The new slide should be ready in a week or so. I was just at Dana's mapping out the whole thing with all of the parts. Since I'm keeping it as a friction fit slide allowing for use of the old and new slides, Dana had fellow repairman and machinist extraordinaire, Ron Pinc, make the male tenon and a few other beautifully executed custom bits.

It'll be a tad larger at .525 than the original .522 bore, but at least I have an original model 8 slide crook, and the 3B+ outers are a weighty nickel just like the original. Sure it'll play different, but with the possibility of me liking it even better than the original. The bell though, wow, what a sound board it is! Gettin' close.

Hello all! Recently purchased an L.A. Williams and I'm loving it! Serial number on the bell receiver is 683 with an M just above it. It has the arrow head counterweight and is in beautiful shape. I understand from the seller that Dick Drewitz and another player from Europe are previous owners; anyone happen to know anything else about it? Will share pictures shortly.

I have one almost identical (serial number 650), with the M, but it is tuning in slide (yours looks like tuning in bell).
Letters (M) stands for the bore size. Some say .490 bore, others say .491 (like a king 2B) - I go with .491 bore. It's a "pre"-model 4, sort of - before Earl started using the model number designators.

Mine plays very BIG for a .491 bore, with a nice fat and full sound. Congrats of such a VERY nice horn !

there might be a registry SOMEDAY --and a spec //history packet could go with each horn
much like bentley//rolls royce --keep track of their cars
cant remember who dick got it from --but i have photo prints he sent
and letter although most was telephone chatted

Post 1938/pre 1941?
If it says Williams on the bell, it was after Earl & Spike Wallace dissolved their partnership (around 1938).
Since it doesn't have a number model, it's probably pre WWII (Earl worked for the government during WWII).

No definite on the year, but probably right in the 1938-1940 time frame - I would think..

and/or what do you use ?

I used a Bach 6.5 AL, monette TS6S, and Wick 4 last night. The bach and monette are too small for a full "symphonic" sound, and the Wick felt hollow and flabby in tone and lip-feel.

I asked Mr. Elliot and he'll follow-up with me soon, but still I wanna know what you guys use.

also, my jo-ral cup mute doesn't fit (too small). I guess I have to buy a bass cup mute (and other mutes)?

my jo-ral straight fits

any advice/stories is appreciated

I've got a Schilke 53 that came with my 9. I've played around with it, as well as as a DE108 with small shank. My go to mouthpiece on anything small bore seems to be a Bach 9, and I always find myself going back to it as it feels and sounds 'right' for my face.

Bach no-letter cup seems to work. 4,5,7, 9, etc. Might need to open the throat.

laminate[glue] several layers of sheet cork
or use thin japan saw to cut wine cork --really good !!!!!!!!!

A Hammond 12 ML or 13 ML will give you a full symphonic sound. I use the 12ML in my .522-.525 bore horns for that full symph sound.

I understand ! I used a 12 ML for my Edwards....I'll try an Elliot first, though. A pimp horn deserves a pimp mouthpiece

the case is cool, and fits everything perfect. The slide is great.

Story goes, it was ordered by Robert Marstaller (1 of 3 model 8's ordered) and then maybe owned by Norman Hunt who became a teacher and head of music at Sacramento State. "Cool story, brah"

Earl had already died by the time that horn was built. Thats what I call a "Bob Williams" - The clearest signs of this are the 3000's serial number, the rounded slide crook and the stamp on the handgrip.

That horn is pretty worn out.

One of my 6's is also a "Bob" with just a slightly later serial number than that one, an unstamped handgrip and a round nickel crook. I like it just as much or maybe even better than my older 6.
