Bach 42 expo find

Checked out a local collector's expo and found a 42 for somewhat of a cheap price. Horn definitely needs work. Spit valve is missing so I put some tape over it and the horn blows quite nice. Slide needs an alignment as I'd rate it a 7/10 (moves, but not freely). Tuning slides move fine. Trigger works, but it is noisy/clanky. Probably some loose solder somewhere as there's a noticeable buzz when trigger engaged. Bell will also need misc dent repair done. All in all I think it was a good deal. Will be using this thread to update the status of the horn once it's been chem cleaned and worked on.

I'll bet the buzzing is from the valve linkage being dry and misadjusted, and also the valve needing oil!

I was gonna say the same. My 42 buzzed whenever it was lacking oil in the valve or on that older style bearing (which when well oiled and adjusted was way more quiet and less clunky than the minibal linkage on later 42s, strangely)

Got the horn back yesterday and am thoroughly impressed with it. My local repair guy found some other small issues that needed to be addressed and really brought the horn back to life. I’ve owned and played a variety of different 42 configurations and this one is definitely a player. Although I must admit that I recently purchased a Laskey 59MD and feel a lot more comfortable on this compared to a standard Bach 5G that I was previously using with my other 42s. I’ve attached a photo of the repair bill to show what all was done to the horn.

Unfortunately it still looks like roadkill. The only thing really new to show off is the shiny new water key lol!

Citristrip, scotchbrite, and lava soap. It’ll make it purdy....... You supply the banjo music.

This would make a good candidate for a project horn. Although I do like how it plays currently.

Yikes! 35$ for the installation, sure. But 65$ for a traditional water key kit is a joke. You can get a fancy Saturn or Pollard for 40$ which is already expensive for a water key...

Edit : wait, I just got that 35 is also for hardware, not for installation. 100$ for a waterkey. Whoa.
