If I put a 42 slide on a 36 bell...
If I put a Bach 42 slide on a 36B bell section, will that give me a real Bach 42B? Besides the smaller bell flare.
Or are there some other differences between those horns?
And what about the differences between a 42 and 36 without valves? Any differences besides the slide?

Slide receiver and bell diameter are the only differences (unless you care about the engraving!).

So that means a 42 slide will not fit on a 36 bell section?

Yes, without a new slide receiver.

I think some 42's will have a bigger neckpipe. The standard one is the same as the 36. Maybe someone can confirm this...

The receiver on a 36 is smaller than the tenon of a 42. You can shim up a 36 slide to sorta work in a 42 bell but you can't do the reverse.

Re: If I put a 42 slide on a 36 bell...
Having owned a 36 bell section with a 42 slide receiver installed I can say that the results are not all that different than with a 42 section - the neck-pipe and tuning slide are identical on both horns. The sound was a little more compact and immediate with the smaller bell and I liked it for chamber and first parts in band. I had bought the section for a song on a whim and likely would not spend money to reproduce the combo.

I had a 42 receiver and tenor put on my 36, so I could do the opposite--36 slide on a 42 bell (should I ever acquire one). I do notice quite a different blow on the 36 now, a little more open and flexible and not as locked in to the partials.

I used a Edwards .525" for many years (42 sized receiver and tenon) and it was an amazingly open blowing slide with the ability to play way bigger than specs would suggest ... miss that horn.AlexMcMahon wrote: ↑Sun Dec 09, 2018 6:07 pm I had a 42 receiver and tenor put on my 36, so I could do the opposite--36 slide on a 42 bell (should I ever acquire one). I installed a 42 receiver in my 36BGM bell section and I use my Bach 42 and Edwards 525, 525/547 and 547 slides. They all work great.
