RHM, we know your taste "runs the gamut from A to B", or maybe from 1925 to 1928, and that Teagarden is too "out there" for you ...however, I agree that this guy is tedious, and would go a step further to say his slide technique, intonation, and sense of time aren't at a high level, either.

Maybe this recording doesn't capture him well; if it does, though, there are probably 20 local players who sound as good, or better, and all around have their **** together better than this guy.

I have all the respect in the world for guys out there knocking themselves dead for little money or fame to play great old tunes in this older style, but this guy's simply not playing at a high level in that style.

Hebie Harper has quite distinctive looking chops, which to my eyes are not what I'm seeing here.

Not too sure about this particular chart, though one of my all time favs by Zentner...but Bob Florence did many of his arrangements.

Three trombones here at the Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland) They are Tom Baker, Dan Barrett and Michael Supnick playing 'Linger Awhile'. The band also has Rossano Sportiello (piano), Lino Patruno (guitar), Guido Giacomini (bass), Giampalo Biagi (drums).

BTW - Michael Supnick is the trombone player some of you did not like a few posts back. May I just say that you have a perfect right to your own opinion but that you are absolutely wrong!

Oh sure, there are a few fluffed notes in these unrehearsed 'hot' jazz festival performances. But its my kind of music!

I am eternally grateful to Tom Baker. It was he that inspired me to drag my horn out from under the bed and start playing again. And this video is shot where I first heard him, at the Strawberry Hills pub in about this same year of 1993.

I quite like the soprano sax but the guy playing at the Strawberry Hills pub is Paul Furniss and he is also a beautiful clarinet player. He plays all the reeds and is a real stalwart of the Aussie jazz scene.

Tom was probably better known as a cornet/trumpet player but he also played wonderful sax in many different styles. He always sounded period authentic on every instrument from King Oliver trumpet to Charlie Parker alto sax. I think I have mentioned before that, shortly before he died of a congenital heart problem while touring Europe, he was concentrating on trombone and trying to play exactly in the style of his trombone hero Miff Mole. Now that can't be bad, eh Christine?

Gees, there is so much great hot jazz coming on to YouTube these days. An absolute wealth with Lino Patruno and touring American stars. Just listen to the great solo from Bob Havens on this version of "Rosetta". Ed Polcer on cornet, Alan Vache on clarinet. I could listen to this Condon style jazz all day:

OK, I know I'm often chastised for criticising the "high and fiddly" stuff, but there is a huge difference between that style of playing (which I recognise as being wonderfully competent, even though I don't like or understand it) and just playing badly.

Allan Ganley - drums

Allan Ganley was to my ears one of the great drummers in any style - so neat but always swinging. He was a stalwart of the British modern jazz scene and I saw him play many, many times when he and I were both young men. He died in April this year at the age of 77. Vale and well done Allan!

Two of my current fav's are Mark Nightingale and Vince Gardner. I'd say they are pushing the envelope for the next generation of the classic style. I also will throw Jeff Bush into the mix. younger cat who I got a chance to play with awhile back on some Cab Calloway gigs.... blows his sox off and saw him the other night playing lead with Harry Connicks band on the NBC xmas thing my wife was watching... a force for the future if I had to venture a guess.

That particular line-up of the Lighthouse Allstars always SWING so much more than the average bop band. Over the years I have tried to work out just what it is about them that makes your foot start tapping as soon as they start to play. It is definitely something to do with the phrasing of the front-line, and I guess Stan Levey must be another vital element. Heck, they all swing in that band! Even the pommy in the pack.

I reckon it would be an insult to say they are 'cool'. Not ever reproduceable, I fear.

I admit to being unimpressed the one time I saw him live, but having heard that recording, I have to think the sound technician at the live concert had a lot to do with my impression, he's certainly smoking on the recording above, it's good to keep the mind open all the time...

You must live in Tora Bora (just kidding)

I've seen Fedchock live more times than any other well-known trombone player (at least non-Boston ca. 1990-2000). He's everywhere! As amazing a bop player as he is, he probably gets more recognition for his arranging. He's actually coming back to Kentucky in a few weeks to direct the all-state jazz band. Usually when he comes this way, he also plays at the Blue Wisp in Cincinnati. I've seen him there twice.

He has 5 cd's out under his own name.
Was lead bone and arranger with Woody Herman for many years.
Was married to Maria Schneider.

His name doesn't seem to make it on the various ad hoc lists of the favorite trombonists that pop up from time to time. He seems to have the whole musical package working.
