Recording self on iPhone for auditions, etc.

Post by herrerabone »

I will be needing to record (video) audition tapes soon for various things, and all I have is an iPhone and a Zoom iQ7 microphone. How should I go about recording myself? In the past, I've just set the phone on the music stand I'm reading from, but that means that I'm very close to the camera. Would it be wise to invest in a tripod to record from further away?

Also, if anyone has any experience with the Zoom iQ7 mic, what settings would you recommend?

Or just throw the camera on ANOTHER music stand like a tripod.

I've tried that, but all the stands I have access to are flimsy enough that they either won't hold the weight of my phone or vibrate a little when I play. Should I just get a more substantial stand and kill two birds with one stone?

Yeah - or borrow a different one. I'm sure others will chime in, too.

Here's a reasonably priced sturdy stand:

You should be able to find a pretty stable stand for around US$25-30

Use a mic stand and this adapter:

You could also clip it onto a music stand, but you'll have to probably get creative either way.
