FS: Gold Rim Bach 6 1/2AL - Newly Plated

Post by ttf_Wasatch Oz »

I posted about three 6 1/2AL mouthpieces I sent to a local shop, in another thread. This company re-plates mouthpieces regularly. They came back today! I had an in-depth discussion about how much gold would go on the rim after they re-silver plate everything. I wanted to make sure they would put the gold down nice and thick. I learned some interesting info; Industry standard for gold plated jewelry is supposed to be 7 millionths of an inch. This company has low-cost gold plated jewelry come to be re-plated because the gold wore off. They often measure 3 millionths of an inch (where gold remains) in jewelry where the gold has worn through.

As you can see from this work order, they put down 20 millionths of an inch of gold on the rim of these. They're confident this gold isn't going to wear off.

I'm selling the nicest one. It's engraved "6-1/2AL" (the other two are engraved "6-½AL").

The plastic was removed to take the pictures, but that's it. No lips have ever touched (or will touch) the gold on this mouthpiece until it's with a new owner.

$95 Shipping included (CONUS).

The slight smudge you can see in this picture on the stem is my fingerprint.

One thing that is different than the factory gold plated Bach mouthpieces is that they didn't take the gold all the way down the inside (see below). If that bothers you, this mouthpiece isn't for you. (Again the smudge on the stem here, is a fingerprint.)

For certain, will do! I've really enjoyed using mine and am completely sold on the gold rim. Fingers crossed it lasts a while.

If you happen to find out how many microinches of gold MPE uses in their plating, let us know. This seems to be the best guarded secret in the biz.

Here is the rather rapid response I got from the MPE people...I told them we were having a discussion on the forum...

They responded:

Good luck with that discussion Image

The thickness is determined by the time and the current (amperage) used in the cyanide gold bath as well as the density of the dissolved gold. We strive for an average of 80 microinches thick.

I hope that helped.
