Mt Vernon Bach 36 bell size

I have a Mt Vernon Bach 36 with an 8.5" bell.  Aren't 36 bells usually 8"?...

Weird. I thought 42 and 36 bells were the same except for the diameter of the flare.

Jimmy Knepper played a 36 with an 8 1/2" bell. I read in an interview that he said it was the best horn he`d ever played.

My Vernon and earlier Bachs were quite a bit loose on the actual measurements.  The 50 is described as a 9 inch bass... though most are at least 9.25.

From my drooling over all pics I’ve seen, it isn’t common, but it is not exactly uncommon either. I myself have a 9.5 inch 45 and a 10.0 inch 50, neither near the listed specs.

Cheers,
Andy

Definitely not!  Luckiest find ever.  Ridiculously good horn.

Interesting!

The nickel sleeves on the handslide are of an equal length, too, which is unusual.

Right. I have seen or owned MV 36's make only a few years and they had the oversleeves of different lengths.

No.  That is normal.  Until the middle of the Mt. Vernon period the oversleeves were of equal length on Bach horns. This is just a sign of the age of the horn.

That's my understanding as well. Same Mandrel. Maybe it pre-dates the model 42? The 45 and 36 were made before the 42, which was pretty much a combination of the 45 and 36 parts.
