Generations in Jazz, Mount Gambier, Australia

This weekend professional musicians and students from all over Australia are assembling in Mount Gambier for the annual Generations in Jazz concerts and competitions that began 25 years ago. Australian virtuoso James Morrison is returning to Generations in Jazz in 2017 with his vast array of instruments to perform an encyclopaedic repertoire of jazz with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. From Armstrong to Zawinul, the 2017 GIJ Saturday Night Gala Concert covers the full trajectory of jazz.

This annual jazz festival offers the renowned James Morrison Scholarship and the Generations in Jazz Vocal Scholarship to the winners of the show.

I think this is a wonderful event to keep the wheels of jazz oiled and a place for jazz in the music education programs for high school students.

I did Mt. Gambier 6 consecutive years in high school. It is quite an amazing event. I dont think my school band ever won div 1 but we placed 2nd and 3rd a bunch of times when I played in it. To be honest, the main thing I remember was stepping off the bus and seeing this huge tent in a paddock filled with thousands of people.... freezing cold.... and very damp. Amazing music but really uncomfortable.
