If you could have only 3 horns...
If you could have any 3 horns for free (not specific horns as in Alessi's actual edwards, i meen any setup) but after you got these three horns, you could never buy another horn again, or own any more horns at the same time, what three would you get?
Id get either a Rath R1 or a Rath R2 (i'd go to teh factory)
A shires .547 (factory)
and a shires bass (once agian pick at the factory)
GO!

HI !
For me, I think :
1/ An Amrein-schneider 9el Bb/F with brushed finish.
2/ A Kuhln & hoyer Bb/F trombone, bolero series if i'm not mistaken...
3/ An Inderbinen Bb trombone Ballet.
But my favourite must be the Amrein...with a red copper brushed finish bell mmmmmmmh to much exciting ! But when you see they ask for 4800 euros + extras for a Bb/F trombone, hum

If you could have only 3 horns...
1) Yamaha 697Z. Or maybe a nice old Bach 12.
2) Yamaha Xeno 882GO
3) Yamaha 613H (or the Xeno bass when it comes out)
Hmm. Anybody else see a pattern?

If you could have only 3 horns...
1. Edwards Alto. Stats unknown yet.
2. Edwards T-302 with a dual bore .508/.525 custom slide. No nickel sleeves. Nickel neck pipe. Dual radius yellow tuning slide. 7.5" yellow un-soldered bell. T-1 sterling silver leadpipe.
3. Edwards T-350 with a couple of different slides and bells. .525/.547 dual bore, no nickel sleeves for orchestra. .547 bass crook for soloing. .547/.562, no nickel sleeves for a bigger sound. T-3 sterling silver leadpipe for orchestra. T-3 brass for soloing. Rose brass tuning slide. Various bells: Elkhart 88H bell, Mt Vernon 42G unlacquered bell, 42H bell for heavy stuff, King 5B bell for real heavy stuff, 8" Edwards yellow brass bell with unsoldered rim for a nice upper register, with the .525/.547 slide. 8.5" Edwards yellow brass unsoldered rim bell for every day usage.
I'm probably not following the rules, but that's my ideal set up.

If you could have only 3 horns...
If I were restricted to these horns for the rest of my life, I couldn't decide on specifics without much research and travel. The broad goals would be:
Alto trombone, maybe with Bb attachment. Primary role in trombone quartet; secondary role in symphony.
Tenor trombone with F-attachment. Maybe 547, maybe smaller. Optimized for brass quintet. Secondary role in symphony.
Euphonium, optimized for concert band.
Of course, making the above decsion assumes I will never develop a taste for jazz, and that is a door I don't want to close. But neither do I want to waste a choice on the outside chance it will happen. Oh, well.

How many possible trombones is that ? It's more than 3 and that's not counting your other 2 selections.
As for me...I'd have the R9 I've already got, and possibly a couple of old classics. An old 62H and an old 50B would fit the bill.

Hi Luke,
I play the Edwards 302 for jazz and the Edwards T-350 for classic.
In a few month's I will visit Shires. So maybe my choice will change.
My mouthpieces are Thein 6.5 bore.
I don't play any bass-trombone.
Good luck.

If you could have only 3 horns...
Edwards t350 (concert horn)
Bach 42 (marching)
and a euphonium (fun!)
I wouldn't get a Bach 42 if I didn't march, but I sure wouldn't want to march with an Edwards or Shires bass, which was my other choice. And I need a euphonium, just because it's cool to play on a different instrument once and a while.

If you could have only 3 horns...
Glassl Alto - Eb (Gold Brass) - maybe a Rath alto once it has been made.
A mint deadstock late '50's Conn 8H (I own and play a 1958 8H although mine has had a lot of playing)
Rath R4F (lightweight red brass bell (possibly unsoldered rim), bronze slides, yellow tuning slide, Hagmann valve & straight neckpipe, detachable counterweight, leadpipe ?)
If I can't include a type of trombone I already own then:
Glassl Alto - Eb (Gold Brass) - maybe a Rath alto once it has been made.
Kanstul 1508 - Lightweight red brass bell (unsoldered), yellow tuning slide, bronze slide, VE Leadpipe.

Alto: Thein (or Edwards or if Shires ever made one....) Alto...although Khul and Hoyer (sp??) might be in there somewhere as well
Tenor: Shires .547 bore (with 2nd .547-.562 dual bore slide for low stuff)
Jazz: Shires (haven't tried setups): (Theoretically) Dual small bore .500-.508 or medium bore .525 with lightweight nickel silver slides and large shank receiver.

If you could have only 3 horns...
Can we include euphoniums and tubas as part of the 3?
I have had very little face time on trombones that I don't own. I have only played 2 other basses- 50B2L, and a holton 181 before (way before!) I started playing trombone. And I have only played a few tenors, and only one alto (Selman). ALSO, I have never played a contra or cimbasso, and there are some other tubas I would like to try.
So, basically, this is all in theory -
1. heavy-sounding double valve bass, I am quite happy with my Getzen so let that be one of my choices, but with a useable thumb brace!!!
2. some sort of contra or cimbasso- Kantsul contra,...
3. large bass tuba- YFB822 (have played and really like it), MW2141 (not played but curious); or an all around C- MW2145..... I love bass tubas, but I sometimes feel that a 4/4 contrabass would be a better fit for me.
I think that I would be better on a cimbasso than a contra.
#2 might be a trigger tenor for when I get older and don't want to play a heavy bass all the time. I really like 42B's, but am also interested in smaller tenors. I would probably use the 42 as a small bass-type horn.
I would love a contra/cimbasso and would probably massively overuse it!!

Can't do it. At least 4 horns are essential: Alto, orchestral tenor, bass, and jazz tenor. It's like asking which 3 wheels you'd like to have on your car.

If I pick three instruments, would opportunities to play them magically appear, too? Along with proficiency on all of them?
I have two instruments at the moment, and I only play one of them. Given the conditions above, I'd pick a modern bass trombone, an F bass sackbut, and a cornetto. Without the conditions above, I'd pick a good dependent bass trombone and two other horns to give away.

Well, I have a Bach 36 that's perfect, so I guess two more just like it would be nice.
Seriously, I once had my hands on a late 1950's 3B Silversonic (missed it by that much!) that I wish I could've bought. And I do miss having a bass trombone around.

if you could have ANY 3 horns, one of them would be a Jupiter? if you checked it, it was a jupiter sousaphone.
and THAT is where the problem lies. youd rather have a sousaphone than a true tuba, or even a marching one?

if you could have ANY 3 horns, one of them would be a Jupiter? if you checked it, it was a jupiter sousaphone.
and THAT is where the problem lies. youd rather have a sousaphone than a true tuba, or even a marching one?

Actually yes. I havent played much sousa phones but a good number of tubas. I was orignally a tuba player. Why a jupiter? Our school has two and to me (my opinion) I play the best tuba I can get sound. Its bore is like .736 which is bigger then a lot of other sousaphones. Plus I like the sound of the sousaphone. I mean I wouldnt play this thing seriously but maybe around tuba christmas or for outdoor quartets. It gets me this dark big sound but thats just me. I never have played a marching tuba or contra. Well the only complaints I have about the instrument is that the tubing where the valves come to my belly dig into my stomach and the bell should be placed higher, but thats about it. I know isn't it crazy someone likes a Jupiter instrument?

If you could have only 3 horns...
i'll take my 2 current edwards horns as my first two
1) T-350 tenor
2) B-454 bass
the tough part is deciding on the 3rd one. i play a large shank greg black mouthpiece with the throat and backbore carved out to be larger than normal, so i need something thats ready to take a lot of air.
i was thinking that the only thing i would like to add to my collection is an outstanding .547 bore straight tenor. any suggestions? who makes the best large bore trigger-less tenor?
i know edwards does, and it would be sweet to have my own all-edwards collection, but maybe theres a sweet thein out there or something?

Some people here really do use their albums. He has this pic of it in there:
That large enough for ya?

Only three horns? That's a tough challenge, but I'll give it a try.
Large-bore tenor: Greenhoe Conn 88H with slide tuning.
Medium-bore tenor: A great-playing Conn 78H or 82H from the Elkhart era. A Rath R3F with a straight gooseneck or a .525 Shires would be possible substitutes for the Conn.
Small tenor: A vintage pre-WW II Olds Standard with the .495/.510 dual bore, slide tuning and a 7" or 7-1/2" bell, reconditioned with plated inner slides and finished in satin silver with a gold wash on the inside of the bell flare. Possible substitutes would include the Rath R1 or one of the new Kanstul TIS horns (if Zig would build one close to the size I specified).
I could get by without a bass or an alto, so these three horns would be enough to keep me happy.

I have a swiss army trombone already...
Bach bass. It has a removable bell and I can put a King 1480 on. With a bass mouthpiece it plays like a small bass, with a tenor mouthpiece it works as a big tenor (not a 1st horn).
So by changing bells and mouthpiece I get 3 out of one.
So I need a Cimbasso/contrabass/narrow bore tuba set now

Shires small bore - or the 2B silver (just can't make up my mind)
Shires Bass - definitely
88HO - (although I have yet to try the Shires .547)

Quote from: "Johnny_verhoeven"Tenor : B&H Regent.
Somewhat off topic here!! Why would you want a student model? BTW the new 'Besson' line trombones are far superior to the old B&H. We've a couple of B&H 'soveriegn' (professional models) lying around our bandroom and can't shift them, even for free!!! Tuning is bad, build quality leaves alot to be desired. In a nutshell, pure sh**e!!
B&H euph's Exellent!
B&H Bb cornets Exellent!
B&H soprano cornets OK!
B&H flugals SO-SO!
B&H Eb horns Exellent!
B&H EEb & BBb basses SO-SO!
B&H trombones NOT-RATED!
That is in my experience the general consenus here in the british isles amongst brassband players. (somebody correct me if I'm wrong!!)
We only buy Yamaha 'maestro', Courtois or willson instruments and of course Rath Trombones.
(Sorry Johnny hope I didn't spoil your day )
