Don't you just love reviving 7 year old topics? Anyway, this one seems pretty interesting so I figured it might be worth it.

For me:
1. Yamaha 882O20TH
2. Yamaha 897BP (Custom Black Phoenix finish---migth as well as long as I can get any horn

)
3. I'm torn between either a Courtois 131R alto or Yamaha 822G bass, don't really know which one I'd use more

Now for a twist, since we're reviving: If you could only play horns from one manufacturer for the rest of your life...

Mine would obviously be Yamaha, although there are many makes I have never tried.

.547 - I'm generally satisfied with my Shires, but I'd like to try a Yamaha 620.

I'm pretty happy with my Yamaha 620 bass, except for some stickiness in the second rotor. I hope to get that fixed, in which case, I'm happy.

Nearly any .508 straight horn. I have a Yam 691 that I'm happy with.

I'm pretty happy with the three I have. In order of acquisition:

1972 Bach 36B

1957 King 3b (Brass bell with both slide and valve section. I got it that way, so it doesn't count as two horns.)

1990s Bach 50T3G

The only changes I'd consider are a SilverSonic bell for the King, a straight bell to go with the 36, and a single-valve option on the bass. I suppose I'd consider a Bach 12 or 16 to replace the King, but I'm not at all sure about that.

In all seriousness:

1: Olds Recording with F-attachment, with both the typical dual-bore slide and a medium-bore valve section.

2: King "5-and-a-half B" frankenbone- Dual bore 0.547/0.562 nickel slide and modified Duo Gravis valve section (key of Bb/F/D or Bb/F/Db). Something akin to this:

3: A euphonium of my own design, a 5+1 compensating double bell- fairly complex, but definitely possible.

Wow.. I posted this 7yrs ago and it's interesting how my tastes have changed.

Elkhart late 50's 6H with a custom(?) 0.525" single bore wide-ish slide and nickel outers.

Getzen 4147IB - never actually tried one, but it seems to have everything I would want in a large bore tenor. I would want removable leadpipes though.

Edwards 502D - dependent Rotax's, 0.547/0.562" or 0.554" slide for my wimpy breath support.

Well, only three horns means that you can only play 3 kinds, so if I play sackbut, euphonium, tuba, small tenor, medium tenor, large bore tenor, bass trombone and contrabass I have to decide what to talk about. I chose small tenor, large tenor and bass.

Who does have experience enough to make the best choice?
I haven´t really. I have owned more horns the I can count, Mostly King Conn Bach Yamaha and some others that are not important to name.

If I could only have 3 horns a good Conn 6H, a not vintage but good Conn 88 and vintage but good Conn 62.

I'm abroad at the moment and can't take measurements, but AFAIK the 78H bells were spun on a 8H/88H mandrel, and tunig slide and neck pipe are different.

King 6B/7B converted to be independent w/ Instrument Innovations thayers or rotors. Working on this one now... Have a spare neckpipe, TS receiver, and slide receiver sections... As soon as I get some things I have sold now I'll be doing that so I can keep the original intact in the event its a terrible idea

Not quite... The first 4 valves are played by the right hand, with the 5th and 6th being played by the left hand. That also explains why the 5th and 6th valves aren't at an angle like the other 4 valves- it makes it easier for the left hand to use them.

Some of those polka baritones have 5/6 front online valves. Presumably they're played like a double bell euph with the left hand coming down to them. Most of those guys seem to only use the first 4 valves regardless...
