Bass with a handle

Post by AtomicClock »

In this Maynard video, the bass trombone player looks like he's using a modern Bb/F instrument, but with a handle (e.g. time=5:51). Is that at all common? Maybe he doesn't want to extend his shoulder? Is it not in Bb after all?

Definitely looks like it's in Bb. Pretty sure that's a low C in the part at that point, so it'd be out on the stockings.

Odds are that's Ron Hughes on bass trombone; that's not exactly the Boss Brass, but it's a lot of the same guys (they were "the usual suspects" for this sort of gig in Toronto for a long time). Maybe some of our Canadian members crossed paths with him at some point and can elaborate?
