Softer 7c

Post by Arendsdale »

Hey all, does anyone have any suggestions for a softer alternative for a 7c? I love the dimensions, the rim contour is just a little too sharp. Thanks!

When you say softer, do you mean a flatter rim?

It’s much more expensive but the AR Resonance is pretty flat. I would also recommend checking out Denis Wick 10CS but that’s slightly bigger I believe.

Other ones worth checking out if you can get your hands on them

Greg Black 11 or 7C
Hammond 14S
Doug Elliot 98 rim
Laskey 48C
Yamaha 47
King 2b+
King 3b
King 3b(f)
Conn 79h
Kanstul 1585

I'm sure you don't play a 7C size piece on your 42. It is much more comfortable to use the same rim size on small bores. For most people there's no down side - everything is better and easier.

If you like the mouthpiece, Contact Ken Titmus at KTCustommouthpieces.com He`ll work with you and re-shape the rim.

I agree the edge of the rim of a Bach 7C is a bit sharp for me too. I have never liked it enough to want exactly that same mouthpiece just with a different rim. Anyhow, the best Bach mouthoieces to me are Bach 11C and Bach 6 1/2 AL. The contour of the rims are more comfortable to me on those and both works very well on a small bore.

I've also found most of the Bach 7c's are a bit sharp. I'm currently playing a King 7C (came with a King 2B+ mouthpiece). It's very comfortable.

If you're interested in the Yam 47, I have one of those listed for sale here in the classifieds.

Good luck to you.

I had a Shires 7C for a while.
I play a Mount Vernon 7C and the Shires felt more like a 6 3/4C than a 7C
You may want to look at Picket`s 7 line . They are rim-wise close to the Bach 7C size but a little rounder
a Schilke 46 is another option in that size
Greg Black has a couple in that size range with really comfy rims. His 9C fits that size
