Poncho Sanchez

Post by AndrewMeronek »

Just for my own curiosity. A good latin jazz ensemble like Poncho's here is super fun. There's a particular way that this (and other salsa bands) are rhythmically TIGHT that is uncommon in other styles.

But I don't know a lot about the personnel here. Unfortunately, this video doesn't have that info tied to it.

Making a couple of basic observations, salsa music often strikes me in a similar way to rock: being on the verge of out-of-control, too loud. Here, it's definitely a "loud" performance but not out of control. Francisco had 2 mics, one for trombone and one for vocals, which is smart. I would prefer the trombone to be a bit more forward in the mix (to balance the trumpet a bit better) but it's OK. Poncho obviously had a very good sound engineer who knows what he's doing.
