Sammy Nestico started out as a trombonist at age 13, and very rapidly rose to professional level. He became one of the fine trombonists of the mid-1900s (joining and often soloing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra); then progressed to arranging and band-leading (including the Airmen of Note and the U.S. Marine Band). He was a prolific arranger of big band music, from professional groups (he was Count Basie's arranger from 1967 to Basie's death in 1984) to school band and jazz band programs. He also composed, arranged, and orchestrated award-winning music for cinema and television. It's worth the time to search the Internet and read some articles about Sammy Nestico.

I confess that Sammy Nestico is one of my heroes. I've always enjoyed performing his music (original compositions as well as arrangements). I was able to spend a few hours with him late in his life. Sammy was incredibly happy, grateful for his good fortune in his life, and remarkably generous. (He sent me complimentary copies of several of his big band arrangements for our band to perform.) I miss him!
