Getzen Trombone KTR

hello and greetings from Germany!

I recently bought on eBay a Getzten trombone, which was advertised as a bass trombone.When it arrived, it turned out, that it is not, even when it has all kinds of tuning slides.

I did some research, but found almost nothing. I only know now, that the trombone was probably made in the 80s. Does anybody know about this specific model and its history? The serial number is KTR245.

Iwould like to know, why there are so many tuning slides and what use the makers had in mind.

why there are so many tuning slides

I don't know. But it looks easy to clean. Surely that's enough.

Sometimes anything with an F attachment is referred to as a "bass trombone", especially if the sellers aren't trombone players.

That wrap is sometimes referred to as a "pancake wrap" because it's flat. It doesn't require that many tuning slides, though they can be pulled out to remove moisture that may get stuck due to the wraps, which is probably why they exist. It's also conceivable that if you pull all of them out all the way, you may have an "E" pull, which would nominally allow you to play a low B natural.

I haven't played many Getzens from that era. They aren't highly sought after, but it probably play pretty well. Do you have any die the bore size?

Thanks for the detailed explanation about the "pancake wrap" and the potential "E" pull. My trombone has a 12 mm shank and an approximately 13 mm bore size.

Cool so that's similar to, maybe even a "clone" of something like an Olds.... I can't remember the model... that had a similar wrap. Probably comparable to a King 3BF.

That is a 357 V.I.P Custom from the late 80s.

It's not quite the same wrap as Olds used on the R-20 Recording (along with some other models).

Notice that the Olds wrap has fewer tight bends. It's also got room to pull the tuning slides. While the Getzen has three tuning slides on the f-attachment, the brace on the main tuning slide is in the way of pulling two of them very far.

I post here the answer I got from Getzen through facebook:

„From what I can find in old catalogs, this is most likely a model 397B bass trombone which looks be a reproduction of the model 97 bass trombone from the 1960's. Looking at the photos, it looks to be exactly the same trombone with just a different model number on it. I will be honest, I have never seen one before. Until now, I didn't even know they existed.“
