OK…
I’ve been a multi instrumentalist since I was a little kid.
I am NOT a real Trombone player although I used to be good…quit playing slide for a long time and then got back into it just enough to be TROUBLE.
When I was a kid, i used cold cream on them
I don’t play live. Just recording.
Basically, my horns hang on the wall often for months without being used. Then something pops up where I need them.
I have an F Reynolds and an Old Ambassador (‘vintage horns..’) and have a few Yamaha and Slide-O-Mix on hand as well as a few oils.
The slides get gummy. I know,,,my fault.
A few times I have ended up just cleaning them off a few times and using oil.
But they will often be sticky where I just can’t get good slide vibrato etc.
So besides taking them into the shower on a day they will be used, what’s the smart move?
I also suspect it is from too much residue left on the slide after use.
Would spraying the slide with water and wiping it down after use make the cream be ok?
I generally spray the mouthpiece and blow stuff out and hang it back up.
THANKS!

As another person who grew up with Pond's I found Trombotine to be very similar in performance. Just have to remember to use less -- it's more concentrated.
When you are ready to play you may need to wipe down the slide but it will work OK.
Remember to do a really good cleanout before switching to the cream -- Yamasnot and Slide-O-Mix are not very compatible.
One other thing I've found is that UltraPure oil works great as a "refresher" for any lube I've tried it on, including Slide-O-Mix. A drop or two on the stockings and work it in and you're good to go.

Along the same lines as cold cream and Trombotine, Berp biolube is worth a look. I find it to be very stable for long stretches on my slides without breaking down or getting gummy.

Makes sense. I think part of my issue was in not remembering which I had used last and they fight each other. GUMMY.
And great to know about oil working well with Slide O Mix as that is what I did the last time.

Yamaha is fine on the slides I leave unplayed for weeks.

I also think I need to get the F Reynolds slide set up.
Just played my Olds and it is just aligned better.
