Soul Instruments F- Attachment Trombone Info?

Post by DrPanMD »

Hello! New member here trying to find any information on a horn I just drove two hours to purchase from a gentlemen who said he used it through college. Only Serial is on the F attachment Valve itself with 1463 being the only numbers there. Anyone hear of this company before? I figured since I am new I probably wont be able to post any pictures right away but Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You'll need to make a couple more posts before you can upload photographs.

As for the instrument itself? I don't really see anything much on the web about them (though what I see isn't flattering). First guess is a private label instrument of Chinese origin.

How does it play?

Quite well with a 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece The only other information I got was from a sister saxophone forum that said their saxophones were dreadful.

As soon as I can post photos I'll post the makers mark. It has really nice full tone on the lower end and speaks without much effort. Haven't had an F attachment in a while and it's a considerably more weight than the Yamaha tenor I have been using.

The Sax references online (I probably found the same ones you did) date back to 2008 or earlier. Those were dark days for Chinese imports: intonation/playability problems, and not able to be repaired.

If you like what you have, maybe you got a good one. But try not to damage it. :)

I would have been a fool to pass up the price. He didn't ask enough for it in my opinion

So basically I have a early 2000s Chinese import? It sure doesn't sound bad at all. Just hate having so little information. I'm a sucker for knowing where things came from

Well, it's just speculation, really. But the lack of information implies a short-lived stencil brand, which suggests Chinese (or maybe Indian) import.

If maybe you showed a picture of the entire bell section, we could help. The brand name doesn't mean much for an early 2000s import, but the horn it was based on might tell us if it's a Jinbao, etc.

Not sure if this is what you meant like an entire side profile? Had to take it out and get some corny photos and test it out. Man I didn't realize how heavy these are.

That looks remarkably like a cheap Chinese instrument I own. I called it a "poor man's Conn 88HO". I am not near the thing right now, so I don't know the engraving, but it's not "Soul". Pretty sure it's a Jin Bao.

Here is my newest acquisition, I see a lot of similarities to yours. (Which I got free, aside from the gas, tolls, and 41/2 hour round-trip) I think we can agree on the tone quality and response being surprisingly good but the horn being heavy, even for a large bore with f-attachment. It also looks as if the mouthpiece on yours and mine sticks out a bit too far. The slide on mine, after a good cleaning, is OK but not great.
I have no idea when mine was made, but it came with a case that looked a lot like a BAM classic, but was so poorly made that I just took it to the curb and didn't look back.
My big gripe with it is the location of the trigger - it is so close to the top slide brace that I have to shift my hand position so it doesn't hit my palm when I try to open the valve. I plan to have a tech look at it, and hopefully offer a solution. I think the horn is worth it.

I would eat my shoes if that wasn't an imported stencil horn, probably JinBao as others have indicated.
