Bass trombone case

My bass trombone case is the Protec PRO PAC.

The trouble I have is that it is as heavy as an anvil, quite bulky to move and the backpack straps are badly designed (they are locked with a plastic thingy that is always unlocking).

I'm looking to replace it and I have a few options:
- Marcus Bonna: expensive, but seems very good. My bass is a 9.5 inch bell, do I need to get the XL or is the standard one good enough (it stores "up to" 9.5 inch bell)
- Kuhnl & Hoyer Light: inexpensive and very light, is it good?
- Gard gig bag: I like this brand (I have the triple trumpet bag), but I feel like the bell isn't easy to put in/out of the bag
- Gard elite gig bag: fits only up to 9 inch bell?
- Protec ipac: is it heavy?

Any opinion on the matter?

According to my bathroom scale:

Protec Pro Pac (bass) - 13 pounds
Protec iPac (bass) - 10.2 pounds
BAM (bass) - 10.2 pounds

I have a Cronkhite cordura double trombone case, medium size. Fits a bass trombone and also a tenor, I'm told it's the same size as their single bass trombone case. Feels light to me, has backpack straps, and if carrying only one trombone inside you can fit music stands, trombone stands, laptops, etc. in the other side. My bell gotten slightly dinged / scratched from doing that though; I chalk that up to my carelessness when packing the case but maybe it's not.

Someone on the Trombone Forum (or was it OTJF?) a number of years back wanted to do this, and actually had Glenn Cronkhite make an insert for the non-horn side to add padding and structural support.

Was the other side still able to hold another horn after the mods, or was it no longer able to?

I don't remember. I always assumed it was not actually attached, just shoved in there next to the slide carrier. Or maybe was a replacement carrier that only had room for one slide. The customer was very satisfied. But it's notable that Cronkhite never advertised it as an option. Maybe it wasn't as useful as I thought.

Just received the MB standard bass case.
Seeing it closed I told myself "they made a mistake, they sent me the tenor case", but no, it is the bass case.
I don't know why they say up to 9.5 inch bell, there is definitely space for a 10 inch bell (maybe even 10.5).
Funny thing: the MB with the trombone inside feels lighter than the Protec without the trombone.

Short conclusion: happy me.

Yes, the MB bass case is the same size and lighter than the equivalent Protec tenor case.

This isn't the conversation I was thinking of. But I found this in my email archives, from Trombone-L:

I have a big bass double bag from Glenn, and I had him make me a simple insert of covered foam to put one more layer between the components in there. He didn't charge much, and it works great. Glenn is very accomodating.

I am using a Kuhnl & Hoyer Light: inexpensive and very light, it IS good. Protects my Conn 112H with Hagman's well. Just works as expected.
